NEW CURE FOR DRUG HABIT PROMISES MUCH MEDICALLY ¢ " EContinued from First Page.) - el Al n, codeine, heroin, chloral hydrate, shish and the scores of addictions todrugs and combinations of drugs Which are known to the hospitals and Ppolice. The implications of the discovery reach far into sociology and into poli- tics and statesmanship. A committee of the League of Nations is given up to study of the drug problem. The United States spends $750,000 an- nually to check the drug traffic. Twenty-five per cent of the prisoners in Leavenworth and Atlanta are vic- tims of the drug traffic. Seventy-five per cent of New York City’s 15,000 addicts are Addicts in the rly $200,000,- drugs. In 87,500 is spent an- nually for illegal *“dope.” Narcosan, the magic fluid which Pr. Horovitz has discovered, is de- rived from several very familiar members of the vegetable family. beans and cotton seeds yield the lipoids through ex ction with hot alcohol. The protein: me from al- falfa or millet seeds. The vitamins come from other plant seeds. Contains No Habit-Formers. To the layman the most significant fact here is that the preparation does not contain ahy morphine, heroin, co- deine, chloral hydrate, nor any sort of alkaloid or other habit-forming drug. Hence the effects upon the suf- ferers during their treatment with narcosan are totally different from the distressing and even horrible in- fluences of some of the other methods and preparations now in vogue. According to scientists who have been studying narcosan, it is a com- pound which breaks down easily. It cannot be made by any synthetic process yet conceived by chemists, but, fortunately for the world, it is easy to manufacture. There is little chance that it can turn out Wrong and produce bad effects or no effects at all. The effects of the preparation are wmarked, but not unduly painful or distressing. Some of the patients cured by it have said that they have ot been disturbed by it at all, but most of them say that in the first few days there is some pain, but pothing so severe as they have had to endure in other treatments. With- in 48 hours they begin to feel calm and happy. All this indicates the enormous speed at which narcosan works. In the opinion of New York specialists, narcosan will always have to be ad- ministered in hospitals or sanitaria, because in his own home the addict can always take his dope secretly. Craving Ends in Three Days. In the course of their observations of the many patients under their su- pervision, Drs. bert and Tilney discovered that narcosan causes none of those night horrors and insomnias which torment the addict undergoing other treatments. They found their patients beginning to sleep restfully by the second or third night without the aid of any soporific. After then most of them declared that they felt much better. By the fourth day the majority asserted of their own accord that their physical craving for narcotics had ceased. By the fifth day their appetites gan to return, while their sleep im- proved steadily. Within a short time their appetites became excessive, and remarkabl universal loss of appetite from which drug addicts suffer. Furthermore, pa- tients digest everything they eat. Un. der no other treatment does this oc- cur. Undoubtedly it counts heavily in the progress toward health. ‘The psychic effects of narcosan are perhaps even more startling. Hereto- fore the addict who has been com- pelled to reduce the amount of dope he takes, day by day, develops horri- ble fears and even hysterical attacks. Often his panic becomes maniacal, and he attacks nurses and keepers in a . It is the shadow of this fear which drives the penniless victim or the addict who by some mischance has lost touch with his supply of dope to robbery, assault or even mur- der as a means of getting the drug. The agony of going without the stuff is unendurable, and no crime for its sake seems heinous. All this is avoided when narcosan is employed. The Sale You’ve Without exception, the cases investi- gated by Drs. Lambert and Tilney developed no such typical symptoms. From beginning to end of the treat- ment the patients do mnot lapse into fears, rages or hysterias. Aids in Healing Ulcers. “Twilight sleep,” brought on by hyoscin, has been extensively used to aid addicts in reducing their drug. But this method has the disadvantage of throwing the patient into a low and persistent delirium, as a rule. Narcosan has no such effect. It puts its takers into a subdued, quiet and peaceful state, untroubled by delirium. According to the report, many pa- tients enjoy this condition so greatly that they beg for extra hypodermic injections of the remedy. It is well known that many a drug addict is a mass of ulcers as a result of the use of adulterated dope, of careless injections or of his contin- ually scratching or cutting his skin to relieve the pathological itching ¢|and crawling sensations in his skin caused by the poison. The healing of such ulcers has always been quite a problem, over and above the task of breaking down the drug habit. Narcosan, oddly enough, clears up the ulcers very rapidly. Drs. Lambert and Tilney have ob- served another peculiarity during treatment. Addicts of all kinds regu- larly suffer from violent attacks of dizziness as soon as they get off the ground. They cannot walk up ladders nor look down from even a slight ele- vation. If lifted up in some such' man- ner they tend to collapse limply or to go giddy and reel. No such Ssymptoms appeared during narcosan’ treatment. Indeed, several patients in the Welfare Island Hos- pital group expressed the wish to help some other inmates paint the walls of the building. When permitted to do this, they walked up tall ladders and worked by the hour on lofty scaffolding without the slightest dis- comfort. Cures Despite Long. Addiction. In assembling patients for the tests Drs. Lambert and Tilney were for- tunately able to find and study vir- tually all important types of drug ad- dicgion and alcoholism. In their re- port they state: “In a few of these patients the ad- diction has been of short duration; in many, of several years, 10 or 15 years’ duration; others have been even 30 or 40 years steadily addicted to some narcotic. . . . Sixty-three per cent of the men and 84 per cent of the women were using heroin; 16 per cent of the men and 12 per cent of the women were using morphine; 7 or § per cent of the men were using cocaine with their heroin. Only one man com- bined cocaine with morphine. Only two used cocaine, one of them with heroine and the other with morphine. Heroin and morphine combined were used by 12 per cent of the men and by two, women.” In all new treatments of this sort, everybody will at once raise two ques- tions. Is the treatment equally effec- tive for all kinds of addicts? And is it permanent? The first question seems to be conclusively answered. Narcosan succeeds strikingly with the victims of any or .all the commonly used drugs, no matter in which combpina- tions these are used. And it also suc- ceeds with alcoholic sufferers—which is a still bigger story yet to be told. The second question eannot be fully answered as yet-and Drs. Lambert and Tilney lay stress on this fact, in order to prevent false hopes among sufferers. Nevertheless, every indica: tion at present is favorable to pro- longed cure, if not to absolutely per- manent cure. Has Been Used Privately. The probability that narcosan effects a permanent cure, or at least one which is nearly as good as per- manent, is heightened by the fact that A. S. Horovitz discovered the compound seven years ago and has been supplying it to physicians all over the United States ever since then, for use in grave emergency cases and in strictly private treat- ments. Complete records of such cases could not be kept. But as far as Mr. Horovitz and his associates have been informed about them, some patients have remained cured for five, six or seven years. ‘When we consider that all other types of cures must commonly be pro- longed for years, and that even then a high percentage of the patients re- Been Waiting for A MONTH IN ADVANCE! « Entire Stock of FUR COATS % off! Narcosan and Alcoholism. To the world wonderful thing about narcosan is its swift potency in destroying the drunk- ard’s craving for liquors. In a few brief words, Drs.
