ON WAY SOUTH AS SNOW STOPS GOLF “Too Weak to Talk,” Says Mfem- ber of Party, Despite Recent Activity in Business. By the Aseociated Press. NEW YORK, December 9.—John D, Year’s Production Eclipses Rockefeller waz on his way to Fior. All Previous Efforts, Mellon Reports. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing during the fiscal vear 1926 “eclipsed all previous records in the production and delivery of perfect work,” Secretary Mellon today re- ported to Congress. - Deliveries for the year, he said, reached a total of 482,307,106 sheets as compared with deliveries for the pervious year of 464,869, 695 cheets, an increase over the 3.75 per cent. This net increase is nted for by an increase of 386 sheets of currency, and a se of 4,069,975 sheets of bonds, certificates, stamps and miscel- laneous work. “In_addition to the amount de- livered,” said Secrétary Mellon, “the bureau printed for its reserve, cur- rency backs and currency backs and | faces aggregating 30,924,312 sheets, for_which $321,986.84 was expended. The average number of persons em- ployed in 1926 was 5,173, as compared with 5,098 in 1925, an increase over 1825 of 75 persons, or 1.47 per cent. $10,483,674 Expended. “There was expended during 1926 a total of $10,483.674.68, as corapared with $10.041,457.46 in 1 an increase e preceding vear of 17,437,106 sheets, m;-l lda today for his annual Winter of golf at Ormond Beach. The founder of the Standard Oil Co. was accom- panied by a retinue of 15, ineluding a physician, his_housekeeper, friends and servants. They left New York on his private car “Mogart,” attached to the Havana special of the Atlantic Coast Line, due at Ormond Beach shortly after 5 p.m. Mr. Rockefeller's health has been represented to be so good in spite of his 87 years that he has recently been taking ‘an active interest in the busi- ness from which he retired a quarter of a centufy ago, but when a report- er sought to interview him on the way to the train he was stopped by a member of the party, who said, “Don’t you see he is too weak to talk?" Mr. Rockefeller has broken 45 for nine holes frequently. His departure is only a few days after snow stopped all golf hereabouts. i The story is told of Miss Getrude Ederle, the famous American swim- mer, that when she was returning from Europe on the Berengaria she was told to put on a lifebelt for a ship drill. Miss Ederle asked the reason and was told that it was merely to be ready in case of shipwreck. “Nothing doing,” she said, “If this ship is wreck- ed the captain’ will have to cart his old lifebelts ashore himsel of $4: 7 Deducting expended for reserve, the net increase of expenditures for de- livered work in 1926 was $120,230.38 over those of the preceding year. or 1.19 per cent.” “The spoilage of currency of all classes for 1926 was 3.7 per cent as compared with the spoilage for the previous year of 5.8 per cent, a de- crease of 2.1 per cent. One of several reasons for the reduction may be at- tributed to a change in the examina- tion of sheets of currency backs, which resulted in a decrease of 60 per cent of multilations on back print- ings. By punching a hole on’ the outer margins, opposite single muti- lated notes, on four-subject sheets, the other three notes which formerly were destroyed are being salvaged. “The bureau ~has continued Iits efforts to improve the wearing qual- ities of the paper currency, being as- sociated in this work with the Bureau of Efficiency, the Bureau of Stand- ards, and the contractor for distinc- tive paper. Important results have been achieved during the past two years as shown by the increased lite of notes in circulation. Improve- | ment in this respect has been brought about through a modification in the | character of the paper, improvements in technical procedure in the bureau, restoration of resizing and establishing in the bureau an adequate working | reserve of incomplete notes, the lat- ter being made possible by action of Congress in granting the necessary appropriation for printing 15,000,000 sheets of backs and faces, and 15,000,- 000 sheets of backs. Money Production Gains. “During the yvear 144,000.000 sheets of one-dollar bills were delivered, an increase of 13,000,000 over 1925, 23,000,000 over 1924, and 78,500,000 over 1917—10 years ago. Increased deliveries of one-dollar notes have per- mitted establishing, in part, with the, Treasurer of the United States, and with the Federal reserve banks, re- serve stocks of completed notes, per- mitting ageing of the notes before ‘payment into cifculation afid so add- ing to the life.” Reporting that the bureau was still renting a warehouse at First and L streets northeast, approximately three miles from the bureau, at a cost of $3,600 a year, the Secretary said this relieved storeroom congestion temporarily. “There is still a great need,” he said, however, “for a ware- house in close proximity to the bureau with spur track service, so that un- necessary hauling and handling of materials may be avoided.” 2 - Raisins grown in the ‘Dynia region of Spain this vear had a total weight of nearly 18,000 tons. Many im- portant Meccano parts are now enamelled in red or green, and these, in combination with the bright brass Wheels and Gears and the plated Strips and i Girders, produce an exquisite effect. Splendid new Models are now made possible and the scope of this fascinating and instructive pastime of Meccano model building is considerably widened. NEW YORK, December 9.—Use by the United States of an derial torpedo, designed to hit targets 100 miles away, was prevented only by the interven- tion of the armistice, William L. Saunders, chairman of the naval con- sulting board of the United States, has revealed. Mr. Saunders talked about the torpedo before a large gathering of engineers assembled to witness bestowal upon Elmer Ambrose Sperry of the John Fritz gold medal. Mr. Sperry is the inventor of the torpedo. The award was made in connection with the forty-seventh annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. “This perfectly fine experiment,” Saunders said, “was stopped by the LOWEST TOURIST FARES TO CALIFORNIA ‘When you go to California, choose the Washington-Sunset Route.
