BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 9.—Buying of high-yielding bonds went on todaf with unabated vigor, and prices foi the leaders were pushed up in manj instances to new high records for thi year. Activity increased also, sale during the first hour running $1,000, 000 in par value above the same Do riod on the previous day. The outstanding feature was tiy German government 7s. There was veritable scramble to buy these bondi directly at the start. They had close on the preceding day at 1061, aftei having established a record high o 106%. They opened today unchanged but as the buying orders came rat up to 107, where a block of $66,00( par value was taken, and then thy quotation jumped to 1073, where § was 21 points above the price al which the issue is callable for thy sinking fund and 15% points abovt the figure at which the bonds wer originally offered in October, 1¢ There was no explanation for 1 sharp advance except that of attr: tive yvield and the activity of the In vestment trusts, which have been ac cumulating a diversified list of du sirable foreign bonds. Attention was then turned to Gen man provincial, municipal and _inlus trial bonds. Westphalia _Electric Power 61s advanced t where they were up a point and a half fr the low of the day before. NEW YORK, December 9 (#).—Op- erations of the United States Steel Corporation have taken a spurt, cur- rent production being estimated at better than 80 per cent of capacity compared with last week’'s scheduled rate of 76 per cent. The average for the entire industry is now placed at about 73 per cent, a gain of 3 per cent over regent weeks, The two leaders in the industria group were the same as the day fore, namely International Mercantile Marine 6s and Chile Copper Ma rine 6s were taken in large volume up a point apparently on the report later demnied, that the company would dispose of more steamers to Britisi interests. Selling above 97, the price was within less than 2 points of ths record for the year. The advance ir the Chile Copper issue was equally conspicuous. ~ Bonds changed hands at steadily rising quotations until the price got to 108, which represented a gain of a point and a half, addeq to the striking runup of the day befre. There was still no news to accourt for the buying. The maturity yvield at the market is so low t bonds could hardly be wanted for an: thing else than their convers privilege. The improvement group was not as spectacular but more uniform. All the higher yield ing junior bonds were in demand at one ‘time or another. Seaboard Alr Line consolidated 6s and Missourl Pacific general 4s were among the leaders of the movement. The Sea. board issue made a new 1926 high as it touched 97. Seaboard refunding 4s, which have been neglected for in the railway months, joined in the advance today There was good buying, too, of tha more conservative issues, but smaller price change. ing Erie prior lien 4s, Baltimore and Ohio, Toledo-Cincinnati division 4s and Norfolk enuzhem 5s. . WHEAT VALUES SAG; TRADING CAUTIOUS Dealers Appear to Be Awaiting Developments—Not ~ Inclined to Press Selling Side. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 9.—For the most part, traders appeared to ba awalting developments in the wheat market today during the early trans. actions. There was evidence of disin. clination to press the selling side, but absence of buying permitted wheat values to sag when rallies proved feeble. Starting unchanged to %aq off, wheat hardened somewhat, and then underwent a moderate general downturn. Corn and oats turned easy, corn opening unchanged to e up, but later showing declines. Provisions were firm. Interest in the wheat market today centered largely on the action of the December delivery. That month con- tinued to show a ntial discount under the May pric Some authori- ties asserted thas notwithstanding liquidation of December holdings ye: terday, millers have large amoun of wheat on hand, and may have diffi culty in disposing of their flour the first six months of 19: Bear leaders in wheat contended also today that there is no question the wolrd has a surplus over and above requirements, and that North American wheat would have to go to competitors’ levels. This was con- strued to mean a decline to a full shipping difference below Kuropean markets unless the world supply si uation is changed by crop damage.
