The Spanish diplomat was being mauled mercilessly by the crowd for striking a traffic policeman in the face and knocking him down because the policeman stop- ped his automobile for violating a traffic rule. Gual was driving his machine through the commercial district dur- ing the peak of traffic and falled to obey a “stop” signal. , Thereupon the policeman ran after the car, stopped it and attempted to arrest Gual. Indignant, Gual jumped out of the car and struck the policeman in the face. Passersby who had witnessed the incident rushed to the rescue of the officer and were showering blows upon Gual when Senor Saenz happen- ed to come upon the scene. The foreign minister, recognizing the Spanish charge, rushed into the vortex of the melee and loudly shout- ed to the crowd that the man they were beating was a Spanish repre- | ‘entative to Mexico. CHESTER, Pa., December 9.— Emily Collins, 18, was shot and killed last night on a dark road near her home, in Linwood, Pa., by a negro when she refused to give him Christ- mas presents she had just purchased for her invalld father. News of the shooting brought hun- dreds of men. tq the scene in a short time. In groups they took up the search for the negro. Police later arrested two negroes on suspicion. One of them was sald to have con- fessed and to have attempted to com- mit suicide while being questioned. Less than a half a block from the store a negro stepped out of the darkness. “Drop the bundles and throw up your hands,” he ordered. When she refused he fired three times, the bullets entering her body. With a cry, Miss Collins dropped her packages in the snow and ran back to the store, where she collapsed. She dled without regaining consciousness while being taken to a hospital. As news of the shooting spread, it developed that several other persons had been accosted by a negro.
