MAIL BANDITS GET 85 IN KIDNAPING Clerk Seized in Daylight and Driven 200 Miles in Auto in Minnesota. By the Associated Press. MINNEAPOLIS, November 6—Se- lecting a town where there are no marines on guard, three men yester- day stole a registered mail pouch, kidnaped a railway mail clerk, drove more than 200 miles—and nétted $5 for their trouble. The robbery, staged at Nibbing, in Northern Minnesota, was as bold a daylight hold-up as ever wassattempt- ed In the State and was successful in all respects, except for the profits. It occurred on a principal street, just befofe noon, within sight of sev- eral workmen, who were not impress- ed because they thought it was a “scene being shot for the movies.” Veteran Employe Vietim. Truman M. King, veteran postal messenger clerk of Duluth, was the vietim who was given the uncere- monious automobile ride to Minne- t of King’s duties included ing of registered mail fron ain to the Hibbing Post Office, , > the depot. When the_ train reached Hibbing, King proceeded as _usual with the vegistered pouch. Two men suddenly confronted him with revolvers and forced him into an automobile, where # third man was at the wheel. King was thrown on the floor of the car and blanket put over him. There he remained until they reached Min- neapo x and one-half hours later. At a street corner in Minneapolis King was put off and the rifled pouch tossed after him. He ran to a drug store and telephoned_to police. Nog trace had been found of the ban- dits early today. Ten pieces of mail were in the pouch. All had been opened, but only one contained money, a $5 bill. It was at first believed that the sack had money for Hibbing banks, usually sent trom the Duluth clearing house. King Gets Black Eye. King did not get a very good look at his captors. He was stiff and sore from being kept so long in a cramped posi- tion and had a black eye as a result of heing hit by one of the robbers when he attempted to kick out a glass in the automobile door to escape. Three stops were made en route to Min- neapolis, once for gasoline and twice when the men tinkered with the motor of the car. King was taken back over ihe route today by postal inspectors. The robbers got a two-hour start on the authorities. When King failed to arrive at the post office within a reasonable time a search was started. Several men working on the roof of a building near the depot, gave officials their first defi- nite idea of what had happened. The workmen said they had not re- ported the matter Wecause they thought the affair either a joke or a “moving picture scene.” They did not obtain the automobile license number, and no trace of the car or King was had until he telephoned police here. e In the completed Rughy wireless atation, England has at last a m of communicating with British v ailing on any of the seas. MEXICO CITY, November 6.—Al- though the Soviet legation here looks on the refusal of an American visa to Mme. Alexandra. Kollantay, new Soviet Minister to Mexico, as a lack of diplomatic courtesy, it hopes that it will not become an obstacle to ultimate resumption of normal rela- | . tions between United States and Russia. “I have not had any official in- formation concerning the matter,” Charge d’Affaires Leon Haykiss said, “but the Department of State’s rea- sons for the refusal of a visa, as given in press dispatches, do not seem to me sufficient to justify for- bidding Mme.
