It is a native of the woods of New England and can be successfully grown either in sun or shade. A shrub often found near it in the woods is the mountain holly (Nemopanthusmu- { cronatus), which ~recommends itself for cultivated planting by its attrac- tive small foliage and hanging crim- son berries, very different from the scarlet of most red-berried shrubs. The common bush honeysuckle (Lonicera_tatrica) has less effective ¥ | berries of a deep crimson red. Al- though it lacks the unusual featyres of some of the other shrubs, it js to be recommended for its many vijtues: Perfect hardiness, adaptability to ei- ther sun or shade, vigorous, rapid | growth making a screen in g short time, and. not the least imfortant, availability, since it can be bought of any nursery. But among small trees there is noth- ing that takes the place of holly, as we realize anew every Christmas. Un- fortunately the Christmas demand for holly is doing too much to eradicate it in the woods near the larger citles. It is a slow growing tree and many years of growth are required to re- place each year’s cutting. So that itis a losing game unless the public can be aroused to the seriousness of the situation, so that the planting will keep pace with the cutting.
