But among small trees there is noth- ing that takes the place of holly, as we realize anew every Christmas. Un- fortunately the Christmas demand for holly is doing too much to eradicate it in the woods near the larger citles. It is a slow growing tree and many years of growth are required to re- place each year’s cutting. So that itis a losing game unless the public can be aroused to the seriousness of the situation, so that the planting will keep pace with the cutting. A group of hol- lies, beautiful for their own sake and for their associations, will repay many times the trouble of their planting.
