Surely not the beau- tiful world of nature around us! Christ was the creator of this world, and the Lord of nature was also a lover of na- ture, as His ser- mon _illustrations and His methods ot life amply prove. But there is an- other ‘“world” against which the word of God warns us in the most emphatic terms. It is the present corrupt world order “Iy Its ce nd forces are hostile to the highest interests of the soul and destructive of may’s moral and religlous life. The world thus understood is the sum total of forces which set the carnal over ainst the spiritual, which glorify the temporal at the expense of the eternal, and which exalt the earthly above the heavenly. The Apostle John follows the ex- ample of Jesus in warning us strong- ly against this evil world. He tells us that worldliness has a threefold manifestation, “the lust of the flesh, the Just of the eyes and the vainglory of life.” And he further says: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the ‘ather 1s not in him. For all that in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eves and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof; but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.” (John, ii.1 Paul, therefore, in this text fs in line with all of Scripture in warning agalnst being conformed to—that . being enamored of and dominated by—this world.
