Capt. Cranston was appointed a sec- ond lieutenant in the Regular United States Army during the Spanish- American War and served continuous- He sustained a severe injury to his spine while serving in the Philippines, when ammunition exploded in a building. He was well known in Army circles as an inventor, having invented and perfected a special type of motor truck for transporting artillery. This in- vention was extensively used during the World War, it Is stated. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Frances Raum, Cranston, and an aunt, Mrs. Charles Haywood, widow of Maj. Gen. Haywood. The Birmingham News Co. won its contention before the Interstate Com- merce Commission today that rates paid by it on news print paper moving from Berlin, N. H., to Birmingham, Ala., during recent years were exces- sive. The carriers were ordered to fix a rate of 64 cents per hundred pounds on all-rail haul and 60 cents on rail and water baul to Birmingham, and to pay reparation for amounts which they may have collected in excess of these figures. The parties to the proceedings will be allowed to present estimates of the amount of reparation due after exam- ining the shipments and rates on the traffic handled.
