REAL LANDSCAPE ESTATE. GARDENING For the Small Home BY ROSE GREELY, Landscape Architect. SHRUBS FOR AUTUMN COLOR. Every one appreciates the vivid Fall coloring of some of our forest trees, and sometimes the home gar-| dener will bring home a bit of th glory of the woods by planting o his ‘own grounds a group of trees especlally designed for an effective combination of Autumn coloring. But hrubs plant- | Autumn ef- | There are shrubs which are zenerally popular because they <0 lovely at this me of the yea shrubs like the Japanese barberrs which every one for its cheerful color when the trees are bare and the days are cold. Usually, however, they are, like the barberry, noted not for the color of thelr le but for the color of thelr berries. The berried shrubs are more frequent and often more beautiful than those with foliage coloe. They will be taken up in a sepsrate article, but because the Au- tum»-colored_foliage plants are less well known I wish to dwell on them alone. ok It s of course impossible to sepa- rate entirely the shrubs of the two 1 since many of those which it leaves have stunning well. For instance the sumacs, noted particularly for the bril Jianey of their tall foliage. are hardlv less bheautiful in the Winter when their great red clusters of fruit make | crimson_blots of stems. The sun appropriate for planting, where is desired. In evergreen tree but in spite o somewhat cou are not inappropr of a small lot 1bit of growth they | te for the planting | There they become | trees in effect, In contrast to the smaller plants, and the picturesque value of their open stems is added to their magnificent Autumn color. As brilliant as any of the larger members of the family Acer ginnala, » form of Tatarian maple, can be used in a la as a tall | rhrub or on a or place as a | small tree, where its 15 or 20 feet of | hefght will seem more. Its Autumn color {s invariably red. A Among the small trees which lle hetween the shrubs and the forest trees there are several which add ma- terjally to the Autumn picture. The flowering dogwood, lovely as it is in the Spring, is hard! with clusters of s vivid foliage. Others of the Cornus family, to which the flowering dog- wood (Cornus florida) belong, have the same scarlet foliage, but as the flow- ering dogwood seems to belong par- ticularly to Washington, and as it is the most effective of the group, we do well to stick to it. Even more bril- liantly red are the leaves of the sour- wood (Oxydendron arb noted alike for i [ __ilue [ s o | mens. | acerifolium), growth, its white flowers in Summer and its beautiful Autumn color. In size it is similar to the dogwood and makes a happy combination with it ecause of its different period of bloom. | The hawthorns are characterized by attractive fruits, but there is also good foliage color among them. The Wash. Ington thorn is especially desirable in this respect, as it is in others. As vivid in color as any of the larger shrubs are the chokeberries (Aronia melanocarpa and Aronia ar- butifolio). The former has black ber- ries and the latter red, but both have the same crimson foliage. * ¥ X % Planted at the base of a group of cedars they make a not-to-be-forgotten spot of color. Equally brilliant is the foliage of the winged euonymus (Euonymus alata). This is a shrub not so much for mass %.nting, like the aronia, for imdividual speci- It makes compact bushes, striking as balls of fire in the Fall, and interesting for their curious winged twigs in the Winter. The blue- berries are desirable for planting in the shade; the highbush blueberry 2 v corymbosum) has splendid scarlet follage, and the low blueberry crinium pennsvlvanicum) §s a lov ground cover, orange red, in the hills, The smaller shrubs are represented by the fragrant sumac (Rhus aro- matica), which unlike the rest of the family forms dense masses of' delicate growth, not over three feet high, with fine foliage of good Autumn color; by the wild roses, some of which, like E blanda, have excellent red leav d red Winter twigs, and by the maple-leaved viburnum (Viburnum which makes beautiful the floor of the forest with traceries of foliage in delicate colors, pink, pale vellow and violet.
