This community group of The Star Model Homes is the last of the homes erected in connection with The Evening Star’s Model Home project. The houses were designed by Gilbert L. Rodier and constructed by Walter A. Dunigan. Mr. Dunigan personally supervised the construction of these homes and gave spe- cial care to see that only the highest grade of materials and equipment were used in erect- ing these homes. They are now completed and open for public inspection. In designing these houses, the architect and builder were faced with the problem of utilizing most economically all of the floor space available, installing a maximum of modern equipment and making the house a real home, comfortable and convenient. The center house of the group is emphasized by a small expanse of tile roof and an pleasing design. The second story is treated in stucco and tile, to break the uniform appearance of the expanse of brick wall, and while some ornamentation has been used, it has been with restraint and with the purpose of avoiding meaningless decoration, detracting from the idea which it was sought to express. The end houses are somewhat simpler in appearance, the porches heing without roofs and wholly of brick. But little ornament is used. The entrances to all of the houses are made attractive by well designed arches of cast stone, harmonizing in color with the brickwork. Tt is seldom that a similar group | of houses designed for the small family is found to be of so pleasing an appearance as is this. The modifications which Mr. Rodier has introduced have been handled successfully and add to the attractiveness. On the first fioor the feature most noticeable is the spa- ciousness of the dining room and the well lighted, cheerful breakfast porch opening off it. In addition to the principal bedroom, which extends across the width of the house, the most attractive feature of the second floor is the sleeping porch. This is large and is inclosed, and entrance to it may be had from either of the two smaller bedrooms at the rear. The garage is built in the basement and is of a size sufficient for a large car. It may be well to call attention to the fact that as the rear porches on both floors do not extend across the entire width of the houses, it is impossible to shut off light from the rear rooms. FEach of these rooms has at least one window looking directly outdoors, thus preventing this undesirable and somewhat common condition. In design, these houses are decidedly different from the ordinary type found In simi- lar developments.
