In 1923 the figure Often a_motor in a dilemma | Was $222, while in 1919 the annual av- to whether it is best to take o |€Tdge expense was $281. . These figures are susceptible of much misinterpretation. They lead to the superficial concluslon that ex- penses are decreasing and that motor repair bills are not what. they used to be. They do not suggest that perhaps what the average motorist is saving in the way of repair bills and tires ha is spending for depreciation because he shorter period he keeps a car. and fewer motorists have nes overhauled. That is left r who takes the car in e or to the used-car buyer if the itical enough to want it 1y the used-car buyer is rticular. AS a consequence e puts up with many little annoy- and often does not care if the nss pass ofl or if the gears slip out of mesh. An_alarming number of used cars are found to be without adequate brakes because their owners will not spend money on new lining and the labor to put the car in safe condition. Possibly it would be better If the figures for 1926 could show that more money was being spent for parts, sup- plies and service. Hundreds of thousands of motorists, trained in mechanical work through ownership of a certain small car, are buying used cars and are tuning them up themselves. This process is said [to have reached surprisingly larse | dimensions. It seems quite likely. | then, that the figures on repairs and service do not reflect the true state of affairs, Foiling the 0il Faker. According to the better business bu- reau of the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World, about 50 per cent | of the garages and filling stations sus- pected of dispensing used motor oils and inferior products actually were found to be making such fraudulent substitutions. It now is pretty well es- tablished that the motorist who does not give thought to what he is buying in the way of lubricants simply is buying trouble for himself. For Sake of Safety. ' Static electricity is apt 1o send a spark from the metal nozzle of the gasoline pump hose to the filler pipe of the gas tank when metal touches metal, and for this reason it is a good plan to tap the nozzle against the rear bumper or fender guards before in- serting it in the filler pipe. Any spark that is about to be released then s less likely to start a fire, because it does not occur directly over the vapor from the gasoline tank. It is also well to bear in mind al- ways that there is more danger of an explosion from an, empty gas tank than from one that is full. It is the vapor of gas that causes combustion, not the gasoline itself. A tank with just a little gas and a lot of air is an ideal mixture for an explosion. A tank that is nearly filled often will. catch fire wifhout exploding. Grease a Washer. Always keep the rear wheel bearings filled with grease. Not that anything serious would happen if they were neglected, hecause these bearings re- ceive lubricant from the- differential. If the thinned lubricant from the dif- ferential is allowed to work out as far as the wheel bearings and passes the hers, however, trouble may be expected from grease being thrown on WASHINGTON greater amount of heat. . D the brakes. Fresh grease in the wheel bearings acts as a very effective washer. Small Valves Need Care. Gther things being equal, it is well to remember that small valves in an engine are apt to give more trouble than large ones, because a larger piece of metal is capable of absorbing a In the days when valves were as large as some pistons are.today, pifting of their heads was a rarity and owners thought nothing of running ma: thousands of miles without valve grinding. If your engine has small valves and the metals are not cholce stock, it will pay to “baby" the engine as much as possible. What's the Answer? 1. What is the Otto-type engine? 2. What year marked the greatest percentage of increase in the produc- tion of automobiles in America? - 3. Who invented the first practical electric self-starter for automobilea? 4. Should an engine “ping” or knock lightly when the spark is fully ;{l]‘\l':nced and it is climbing a steep 5. Where does the water go to that runs down into the doors of the closed car? Think these over during the week and look for the answers in.this de- partment next Sunday. You may be wrong. C (Covyright. 1926.) . OCTOBER 10. 1926--PART: 3. BRAKE TEST DEVISED. Heat Key to Equal Adjustment of Four-Wheel Kind. Are vour four-wheel brakes adjusted equally? Here is a simple way to tell: Apply the brakes both gently and vigorously about a dozen times, then stop the car and feel each brake band to see whether they seem equally hot. Allowance should be made for greater heat at the rear bands, use in some cars these brakes operate before the front ones come into action. This test may keep the bands on one side of the car from burning out prematurely. INASH Nash-Rinker Motor Co. SALES and SERVICE 6 years at the same address speaks_for_itself 1419 Irving St. N.W.
