By the Assodlated Press. NEW YORK, September 18.—The volume of buying in the steel market so far this month has about kept pace with the two previous months and the movement .into consumption was large. During the past week there have been some indications of a slight falling off in the demand for some descriptions, notably struc- tural materials, but gains in other, and the outlook was for continued activity. Production was reported slightly smaller but not enough to be a factor and prices were steady. Pig iron was steady, with a fair demand from smaller consumers. . No improvement has been reported in the demand for copper. Many of the larger consumers are supposed to have covered a good part of their September and October needs, and buyers generally are holding off pend- ing an improvement in export de- mand. Meanwhile prices are being shaded in some quarters and sales of small lots have heen reported at about 1430 to 1435 for electro- Iytic. Tin scored a rather sensational ad- T to cover nearby requirements and on small production and the bullish showing in London. -Fears that the upturn had been too rapid and_ the possibility of an increase in afloat supplies at the end of the month sub- sequently brought out freer offerings and resulted in a moderate reaction. steady at the recent de- cline with consumers more inclined to cover nearby requirements. Zine was firmer with a better de- | mand for futures owing to confidence | that consumption Will continue Uberal. Antimony was easier on lower firm offers from China and moderate reselling here. BUTTER IS STEADY. Medium and Lower Scores More Freely Offered. CHICAGO, September 18 (#).—The butter market ruled about steady to- day with trade only fair. Medium and lower scores were more freely of- fered, but only a few buyers showed any interest. The centralized car market was about steady with offer- ings slightly in excess of the light de- mand. By the Associated Press. EW YORK, September 18.—Ab- Iy changing its course after vesterday's drastic decline, the stock market rallied in spirited fashion to- day under the leadership of the Van Sweringen railroad issues and a hand- ful of prominent industrial shares. ‘With the market's technical position greatly improved by the latest shake- out, confidence was speedily restored by the flood of buying orders which poured in for the railroad stocks. This support was powerful enough to counteract the influence of forced liquidation at the opening which re- sulted from the first resort to margin calle in many months. Buying on Merzer News. ‘Word that the Van Sweringen in- terests had promised another revision of the Nickel Plate merger terms favorable to minority stockholders of the constituent roads started the spectacular buying movement in the shares of these companies. Prospects that the Chesapeake and Ohio opposi- tion would be overcome by doubling the annual dividend guaranty sent stock record above 171, and it closed only fraction below the top. Thersame fac. tors accounted for a gain of nearly 6 ints in Nickel Plate and advances of l to 3% quette issues. Other railroad shares made a be- Iued response to me fnoruble news lopments of the week. ich pre- vlnully had failed to &reun 1r|ler('!t Atchison, Illinois Central.. Norfolk and Western, New York Central and Louisville and Nashville were strong. while Southern Railway shot up 3 points on the announcement fhat pre- ferred stockholders had lost their suit to compel an equal division of divi- dends above 5 per cent. Industrials Are Slower. The recovery of the industrial shares was less pronounced, but it was suffi- cient to give the market an appear- ance of solid strength. General Motors crossed 155 to the highest price under its present form of capitalization and United States Steel, after dipping be- low yesterday’s low level to 143, closed a half-point net higher at 144%. Apparently discounting its early re- turn to a dividend basis, Bethlehem Steel matched the year’'s peak price of 501, closing only slightly Nlow this dgure for a gain of more than 2 points. Equipment shares, including American Locomotive, ‘were bolstered up by predictions of in- creased railroad buying. and substan- tial improvement took place in Granby Mining, Cast Iron Pipe, du Pont, ‘White Sewing MMachine preferred, Owens Bottle and Ancrican Smelting. Mack Trucks rad ‘Varner Pictures A" continued under sllinx pressure. Commodity Prices Lower. Commodity prices were mainly low- er. Wheat prices declined about cent a bushel and cotton closed 9 to 1 points lower, bringing the average loss for the week to ahout 90 points. While the live poultry market has ruled firm all the week, due to the | demand for the Jewish holiday, re- ceipts have been moderate and values will probably ease off next week. good demand still prevalis for heavy fat Spring chickens, 213 pounds and over at 28 and 29, with smaller stock selling 25 to but Leghorns only bring 24 to and Black Minorcas 23 to 25. ‘The demand for fat old hens has been good and constant the past | week, and the market closed very firm at 27 to 30, but thin old hens will not bring over 20 to 25, and leg- horns and old roosters are slow sale at 20. There is a good demand for the better sort of ducks at 25 to 27. with no surplus of- this stock. but small and poor ducks are not wanted. even at 18 to 20. Guinea fowl are in more liberal re- ceipt, and market a shade easier at to 75 each for young. and 40 and 130 each for small. The live cattle market rules steady to firm under only fair to light re- ceipts and a fairly good demand pre- vailing for first quality stock, but common cattle are slow sale with prices in buyers' favor.
