Bat Nelson Crossed Kearns STAGED BOUT ON BOAT, DESPITE CONSTABLES Skipper Helped Jack Put on Historic Scrap for Entertainmnt of Mob. Fixed Contest for AuelL . BY JACK KEARNS. AT NELSON boxed Jimmy Britt 10 rounds to no decision in Los Angeles. I took Scaler and hit out for Seattle, I was bound that Scaler would get his crack at Nelson. If we could only meet that bird and slap him over, we would be in for a lot of money. 1 saw a chance to put over a boat fight. They were popular in those days. I hired a big tub called the Skookum and sent transportation to Nelson with instructions to meet me in Seattle. Bat made the jump from San Francisco and both he and Scaler were in training fos the bout. The fans were eating it up. At least, I was going to have a boatiul. I got, Nelson a week’s work in some honkytonk and business was drumnied up to the queen’s taste. Right in the middle of my plans Nelson gets a telegram from Willié Britt, saying: “Why fight an unknown like Kid Scaler when I've got you matched with Joe Gans right here in Frisco?” Nelson“ran out on me. Petrone was get somebody S else for Kid! I hit on Babe Cullen. Constables in Merry Crew. On the appoint- ed day the good ship Skookum set sail for Alkl Point, near Seattle, with the intention of land- ing there and pitching our ring. When we attempted to put her nose in at the point a couple of jerk water constables who had joined our merry crew told us to sail right on with our durned game. Well there we were with the fighters set to go and the best house of my career rocking right around me, howling for action, . T hunted up the captain and he was a regular. I explained about the bulls and_he said: “Sonny, don't you worry. We'll pull off the fight just the same.” So he headed the gallant Skookum out to sea. I've never seen such a spectacie. It was ' a wideopen boat, I can tell you that—crap games, three-card monte, the strap game and find the little pea under the shell. There was plenty to drink and plenty was drunk. When the captain had sailed out far * enough to suit himself he mounted a cracker bex in the center of the crowd and made this little speech. Scotty Declared Himself. “Gentlemen, you've come with me to see a fight. You're not going to be disappointed. I'm with these boys here and I know you are. I under- stand that there are a couple of fly- cops among us who are bent on stop- ping this bout at any cost. Let me warn these cops that it is going to natural demand weighed 121, Hall 118, JACK KEARNS. cost them a little spell in irons if they dare lift a finger to prevent this bout. I'm captain and master here. We are outside the three-mile limit and the first man who peeps against this eon- test will be put in irons and no pil- lows go with the sentence.” This captain was a _tough little Scotchman and he meant every word he said. “Boys, get your fighters ready. The ring is all set up and I repeat that I won't stand for any con- stables butting in. That’s final. Let the fight go,” thundered the old skip- per with plenty of emphasis. So we went. The fight, as vicious a battle as I _ever saw, lasted 20 rounds and when the referee called it a draw, hell broke loose. By this time everybody was stiff and everybody was perfectly willing to sock or be socked. It took a real cap- tain to quiet that mob. Scotty tamed them finally. They forgot about the decision after a time and went back to their gambling. We didn't get back to the dock until the next morning. Money, pins, rings and watches had changed hands a hundred times in our little cruise outside the three-mile limit. Hopped to Spokane. It was a sorry-looking mob that tottered down the gang plank when we got back to Seattle. After a couple of days, I went over to Spo- kane. There I hooked up with Eddie Merino and prepared for & trip to Canada with him. I had heard that Attell was to leave New York for California to fight Owen Moran for Croffroth. I sent Abe a telegram asking him to stop off at Spokane to fight Scaler. It would be a nice “pick up” as I pointed out in the message. Abe dropped in all right, but the prose- cuting attorney put a damper on the proposed bout. Abe needed money badly. He had made a few losing wagers in Spokane and was strapped. I told him that I . would hop Merino down to Sand Point, Idaho, and we could go along nicely there. Abe promised not to spear my man and the match was arranged and made much of at Sand Point. Coffroth got wind of it and burned the wire up between Frisco and Spokane. “You've got to get to San Franeisco | at once” Coffroth telegraphed. ‘“‘Your title is at stake and I have given you a 10 per cent bonus to call off a fight in New York. I positively prohibit your fighting in Spokane, Sand Point or any place else.” Abe showed me the telegram and asked me what to do about {t. ““We'll answer it” I told Abe. And we did. This is the message that Attell sent to Coffroth, L “Dear Jim: Quit your kidding, I need the money.” And that was true. We were in soak for everything we had and here ‘was a chance to put the lugg in Cof- froth. We didn’t get a reply and down we go to Sand Point, Idaho, to fight my own man, Merino. Abe and Eddie boxed 10 rounds. I was the referee and of course, to make it strong, Abe’'s title was at stake, (Copyright. 1926.)
