e “USury” in U. S. Attacked in London As Daily Mail Opens “Publicity” Drive COMMISSION BANS 2.75 Glove Silk Step-ins, 1.65 3.95 Glove Silk Chemise, 2.45 TRADE TERM LS Three Companies Ordered fo Desist From Specifying “Philippine Mahogany.” Orders were issued by ‘the Fedoral Trade Commission today against three companies, instructing them to desist from using the words “Philippine ma- hogany” as applied to a wood which is not genuine mahogany “as is gen- erally understood by dealers and the purchasing public."” The cempanies are the Indiana Quartered Oak Co. of New York, Jones Hardwood Co., San Francisco, and Thomas W. Powe and F. C. Harring- ton, trading as the Thomas E. Powe Lumber Co. of St. Louis. Commis- sioner Humphrey dissented from the orders. The commission held the wood ad- vertised and £old by all the respondents as mahogany is imported from the Philippines, the common trade name being lauan and tanguile. ‘Wood Declared More Porous. “It was further found,” the ruling | said, “that the wood ‘Philippine ma- hogany’ is much more porous than genuine mahogany, and that in fiuish- ing the Philippine product the appear- ance of genuine mahogany is simu- lated, but that with time and wear the filling shrinks into the' pores and consequently presents a much inferior appearance after a lapse of time than does the genuine mahogany.” Commissioner Humphrey said he agreed that the word “mahogany” should not be used in describing the wood from the Philippines without the prefix, “Philippine.” This would be in accordance With the common usage, he said, as in the trade it is customary to say “African mahog- any,” “Honduras mahogany,” ete. “If the majority is consistent,” he said, “it appears to me that it will at once proceed against the Ma- hogany Association for using the term ‘African mahogany,’ as this wood, like the Philippine product, is not mahogany botanically.” Sees Blow at Competitor. The real “milk in the cocoanut,” he said, was the Philippine mahog- any was coming into the United States duty free and was becoming & serious competitor of the Mahogany Association, which, he said, was the only objector to use of the descrip- tion. The order, he said, would tend to give the association a monopoly on the American mahogany market. He held that in its higher grades Philip- pine mahogany is equal in beauty to the finest of other mahogany woods. The majority, on the other hand, @eclared “the absence of certain characteristics possessed by genuine mahogany prevents lauan and tan- guile from being used because of the great prevalence of worm holes which constitute serious efdects in all Philippine ‘woods” for a number 01[ ;:,urposes where mahogany is de- sired. LONDON, July 21.—Americans now in Europe are being told some nasty things about their dear old “Uncle S8am Shylock.” It seems that he is a tight-fisted old cuss and has been misleading his family concern- ing financial affairs.
