Tales of Well Known Folk || In Social and Offjcial Life Belgian Envoy Acting Dean of Diplomatic Corps in Washington—King Alfonso Interested in U. S. Businels Met}lods. BY MARGARET B. DOWNING. Senor Don Juan Riano’'s departure or Madrid leaves the Belgian Am ssador In the post of acting dean of the diplomatic corps, but seems probable that the Sp: bassador will return before Ea tide Baron de Cartler will take no especially heavy social or politic dutles. But that King Alfonso h: summoned his representative in Wa fngton is of the keenest interest, since it is well known that this soverelgn entertains the highest re- gard for Amer; acumen and he has in mind a program of expansion in which the methods employed by Unele Sam's sons and daughters are to play : role. There are hints from London that he may join the large British _colony which™ is choosing homes for .the Winter months near Fort Lauderdale, not far from Miami. A British improvement company is in possession and is fast erecting a pleasant but exclusive seacoast resort. Mr. Howard Reifsnider, one of Philadelphia’s most accomplished an- tiquarians, has begun the crusade in his city, and as a preparation for the sesquicentennial to open on July 4, to furnish business offices and cer- tain rooms in hotels or inns just as they were when the chief commercial city of the colonies entertained the intrepld delegates to the Congress con- vened in Carpenter's Hall. Mr. Reil- snider has fitted up a long room which is a replica of Banker Willing’s pri- vate office in the days when men like Franklin, Robert Morris, Thomas Jef- ferson, John and Samuel Adams and others' of that immortal company dropped in to discuss finances in case the worst came to the worst in their efforts to form a new state. The walls are all of the prevailing light buff, with white ceiling decorations. Hooked rugs of gay colors lie on the white painted floor, and a long table made by the German manufacturers of Pennsylvania about 1745, and which is called by collectors the An ican Chippendale, occupies the lensth of the room. Capaclous chairs, dei- nitely of the style called @ennsyl vania chairs, are about the table, ar there is a high Heppelwhite bookcase and desk combined, loaned by a mem ber of the Willing family. Old er gravings adorn the walls, and a crackling log fire burns merrily, but in July, when the room is to be offi- clally opened, a fine hand-wrought screen with sampler embroidery will fill the chimney opening. Mr. Re snider is rapidly influencing others to prepare such a chamber, following descriptions which are easily obtain able. Robert Morris had a fine home in Philadelphia in 1776, and his de- seendants own as spacious a dwelling now, though a newer structure. This reproduction of the city at the birth of the Republic will extend to ball rooms, gardens and dining halls, and no feature of the celebration is awakening such interest as this in tention of the citizens to present the atmosphere and circums 1776. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lindon Smith, the latter the talented daughter of George Haven Putnam and niece o the librarian of Congress, are Among the few Americans who know Mexico from one end to the other and who pass months every year exploring on horseback its least known regions. Mr. Smith is an artist and was_the chief adviser of the late Mrs. Jack Gardner and had charge of arranging her treasures when they passed into the keeping of the municipality of Boston. Mrs. Smith, who was Corinna Putnam, is a_writer, and there are three talented daughters, Rebekah, Frances and Lois, who follow the par- ental migrations astride and who paint and write and dip into drama as the mood suggests. Mr. Smith has placed on canvas some of the fascinating scenes of interior Mexico, in moun- tain parts where the ordinary tourists never penetrates and where even the intrepid geographer is wary. He and Mrs. Smith over that for one who knows old Mexico intimtaely, Algiers, Morocco, the cholcest bits of the Ri- vera or Spain beckon in vain, The pretty young Countess of Sea- field on April 5 will enter her ma- Jjority and would, were it not for the suit against her by a claimant for her title and estate, become one of Great Britain’s leading heir is likewi oungest peerage storm- ing at of the House of Lords. vbody in the United Kingdom and many other parts of the world who love such a romance as will be unfolded will be on the e qul vive when the case is Ddfore the lord high chancellor at the end of March. The claimant to the honors of this lovely young girl is as aged as the latter is youthful. He alleges that he is the son of that Earl of Seafleld who held the title in 1846. The romantic part is that the claim- ant is basing his evidence principally on his striking resemblance to the entire clan of Seafleld and Blantyre, and the court proceeding probably will appear like an art exhibition, in that photographs of the family gal- lery at Seafield will be produced, to- gether with many of those of the claimant taken at the same age as those portrayed on, canvas. Legal minds the world over watch the pro- ceedings with keenest interest, in that much depends on whether the chancellor will admit groups of like- nesses such as those of Queen Vic- toria and her daughters, the prince consort and his sons, the many groups of Cecils, of Percys and of _(Continued on_Fourteenth _Page.)
