Wells is working on a novel which, it is reported, will contain a quarter of a million words. This work, which will probably be completed in the late Spring, 1s sald to be somewhat in the style of his novel, “The New Michie- vell.” Although Mr. Wells denfed fit, the general opinion was that many of the characters in that novel were thinly velled sketches of celebrities, including Lord Ifour, iR 20l _ Our idea of a great man is one who lias traveled extensively and neither lectured nor writes about it. LONDON, February 27 (#).—Alfrea Orr, the American artist friend of the late John Singer Sargent, has achleved his great ambition and moved into Sargents house in Tite street. He Is now engaged in paint- ing his first picture in the studio where Sargent produced many of his masterpleces. This has been made possible by the generosity of a patron who pur- chased the Sargent property and gave the artist a long lease. When Bargent visited Mr. Orr some vears ago and he asked if he intended to devote his life to portrait painting, Mr. Orr said he did. “Then you have my sympathy,” remerked Sargent. and added, “oh, those women." By the Assoclated Press. PARIS, February 27.—Dogs may howl, asses may bray, horses may neigh, goats may bleat and cats may caterwaul, but the cock, proud em- blem of the French Republic, may not crow at night in Paris, under pain of death. So the law stands. ‘This strange anomaly was hrought to light by a distinguished artist who, recovering from a long iliness, was kept awake at night by the barking of a neighbor’'s dog. He applied to an eminent lawyer, Leon Barthou, broth- er of former Premier Louis Barthou, but on looking up the authorities it was found that the ories of all ani mals are tolerated, with the single ex ception of the crowing of the cock. 2 —Each model is originated in Paris by the House of Philippe o & Gaston. You can tell its French origin at a glance. It ighter is imported and then re-created by a famous American de- signer. But only because this importer is among the very largest dress manufacturers in the country and are re-creat- ing these frocks on a colossal scale, is it possible to offer them 1 blue to you for so very little! —They are impressively beautiful frocks—in styles that will intrigue and fascinate you. They employ the smartest of silks in stunning prints and plain colors—colors and designs in that are unforgettably pleasing. —There are sizes for madame and mademoiselle—and many more models than the four we have pictured above.
