John Smith and His Radio BY FREDERICK C. RUSSELL Car owners throughout the world have fellowed John Smith in his daily motoring—and have benefited thereby. He also is a vadio fan, and is willing that his fellow fans should be amused and profit by his evening experiences. Smith has a facudy for “finding out things,” so it will pay radio devotees to follow him §n The Sunday Star each week. 54.—~Where the Wear His experience with automo taught Smith that every me(-e‘ut echanism is subject tp wear. Nat- urally, as time wore on he began to speculate as to when his radio set would start to wear out “The rate of wear on the set de pends upon your ability to know how that r 1s and your willingnes 10 delay or ofi their effect through care,” I told him, ‘It is more impor tant to know .re ihe wear begin: than to know when the set will bc y ik hauy. he diads, the oppor was lent for poiniing ou m the various waws in which s en as we star d the on he was twirling the dials R Sationy 1o whicHERe ¥ nt to reyurn. The jarring of the house be sufficient to detune the sets tage of the game you will around the set all the time during reception in order to keep it tuned to the desired station. “One of the things that is bound to shorten the life of your set is this frail table on which you have it. Tvery time you plug in the whole sot swings a jittle. I've warned you about this before, but only in con- nection with the tubes. You ought o know by now that it doesn’t do the delicate filaments of the tubes any good to be jarred, and if you want to defer the time when your get will be troublesome, you will take mny word for it that this jarring is Iad for everything else on’ the set. To prove it I showed him the loose ground connection on the back of the tot, Inside the box there was alsc 8 soldered connection that did not Jook any too strong. On the whole the soldering looked to be of a very nigh order. Smith Has God Set. for Smith, his set is . well designed The ondenser s ts are designed to al- Jow looseness to be taken up. There is ample room for the installation of new transformers. The connections for holding the prongs of the tube are strong and can be bent for tighter contact without danger of breaking. But service work on any mechanism entails a certain amount of unavold- able damage. It always is better not voubles start 0 at of the wear on your set will come from causes you least expect, T added. “Did you ever stop to real- yze that every time you raise the top ©of the set to look inside you are help- ing it along the road to old age? When you lift the cover you breathe divectly upon the condenser plates. You avoid dampness and yet you often open the hood to give the set a good e of it. O na of the things you should avold is the opposite extreme. Too little dampness s just as bad for the set as too much. If the set is allowed to become too dry the case will warp. This can cause more trouble than you think. Just how much dry heat a set will stand depends largely upon the seasoning of the wood used in its case, “I speak of this because one of the rules of radlo involves this risk of excessive drying out of the set's dio operators are told to Fortunately well buiit case. b Radiolas, ELECTRICA OPE! ! & o WM. T. & T. Co. The Senate passed recently an in- teresting resolution directing the Sec- retary of Commerce to investigate the use of the Squler wired-wireless pat- ents by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and make a report on the annual value of these patents to the company and the reduction in public rates, if any, due to the free use of the wired-wireless patents. Senate resolution 149, introduced by Senator Walsh, reviews the history of wired-wireless investigation begun in 1910 by Maj. Gen. George O. Squire, U. 8. A., retired, then a major in the Signal Corps, under an appropri- ation of $30,000 made by Congress. His subsequent investigations showed that multiplex telegraphy and tele- phony over wires could be accomplish- ed by the application of radio to wires in the method commonly known “wired wireless.” Patents Nos, 950356- 7-8-9, taken out by Maj. Squier in 1911, provided for their use by the Government of the United States and its citizens without the payment of royalties, These patents are now used by the Bell Telephone system free, it was stated, a court having held that as the patents were public property the inventor was not entitled to any com- pensation therefor. Now the Secretary of Commerce is directed to make a full report to the Senate to the extent to which the system is used by the American Tele- phone and Telegraph Co. in govern- mental and public service, the annual value of such use and the reductions made in rates, if any. BRSPS Broadcasting stations are now in wegular operation in the following German cities: Berlin, Breslau, Frank- fort-on-Main, Hamburg, Koenigsberg, Leipzig, Munich, Muenster and Stutt- gart, states a report to the Depart- ment of Commerce from Trade Com- missioner Pilger, Berlin.
