FRE FRON HAREN, WOVENWOULDWED Emancipated Turkish Beau- ties Seek Marriage as Only Chance to Live. Correspondence of the Associated Press ANGORA, November 3.—Hundreds of beautiful women, highly trained in the social graces, arts of the toilette, dancing, music and religion, who have been freed from harems, now have the Turkish government seeking husbands for them. Most of them are wholly unfitted for the practical work of life. Abandonment of the harem al placed on the hands of the ment many enuchs, but their disposi- tion has not been so difficult. Any* departure from the rules of conduct in the harems was severely punished by the eunuchs, who main- ned security of the places and who were euphemistically called “Masters of the Maidens,” or “Chiefs of the Abodes of Felicity.” While Sultan Mohammed VI had only four legal wives, he had at his disposal several hundred “ikbals,” or favorites. Sultan Abdul Hamid was said to have had 1,000 wives in his harem. Mme. Gypsies Forsake Calling. Fewer gypsles are to be found in Europe and the United States in recent years than ever before. D. T, FRIDKY, NOVEMBER 27, 1925 DIAMOND QUEST ACTIVE IN SOIL DEEMED BARREN Kimberley Reports South African Districts Invaded by Scores En- gaged in Staking Claims. By the Assoclated Press. KIMBERLEY, November 3.— Scenes similar to those enacted in Ok- lahoma when the “strip” was thrown open for settlement, have been wit- nessed repeatedly in different parts of the South African diamond districts within the last few months on grounds which heretofore had been considered barren. There are thousands of persons who have become nomads, wandering about the country and engaging in every rush possible to stake out claims at the opening of dlamond diggins such as took place some weeks ago at Oersonskraal near Bloemhof. The race, as in Oklahoma, is made on foot, by men and women on horseback, while others follow up in the rear with thelr “covered wagons,” ground permitting, to furnish the diamond seekers with supplies. The area to be staked out is pro- claimed by the government, usually after some lucky prospector makes a discovery of traces of the precious stones. Then the race of the diggers begins. Claims are staked and & new town appears. The disappointment of the diamond diggers has been great. At most but 2 per cent of the men make a stake, and in most cases a fortune slips through the miners’ fingers through drink, gambling and sordid living. Only 25 per cent make a_decent living, 10 per cent, some kind of a living, and quite 63 per cent sink into increasing distress, sald an investigating com- mittee. His Generous Bequest.
