More than five billion bottles or glasses of soft drinks, exclusive of cereal beverages, are consumed an- nually in the United States. The Bureau of Chemistry, dnalyzing these figures, found that & large proportion of these drinks are imitation fruit beverages, made by adding ficial fruit flavor, color and a fruit acid to sugar syrup, which is mixed with carbonated water. They have a legitimate place on the market, it said, provided they do not masquer- ade as true fruit products and con- tain deleterious ingredients. The imitations, the bureau declared, have been so perfected that they can- not be distinguished either by taste or odor from real fruit juices, and the chemists even have been able to pro- duce the cloudy appearance character- istic of freshly pressed fruit juice. One of the rare instances where persons under indictment on charges of first degree murder have been mitted to ball was recorded in the District Supreme Court yesterday when Justice Hoehling ordered James Bostick and James Sample, both col- ored, released under bond.
