Georgetown, City of Hidden Gardens, Has Acres of Mysterious Onrush of Modern Period. Tenney and Sevier Plots Famous. One of the best of these ancient gardens now is split in two sections/ at the rear of adjoining houses—those of Robert B. Tenney, 3108 Q street, and John Sevier, 3124 Q street. By far the larger part is the Sevier garden. To go into the Sevler gar- den from the street is like stepping out of the twentieth century into the pages of Thackeray. There is a laby- rinth of box made up of several hun- dred individual bushes, most of which are at least a century old. They are growing very slowly now, than an inch a year for the most part. But they are in flourishing con- dition despite their age and promise to survive at least into another cen- tury. With their siow, sturdy growth the bushes assume all sorts of fan tastic shapes which are almost as not more | few years ago, a section of the box more famous than any in the adjoin- ing estate. Probably either the plants or the cuttings were imported from England. During the first quar- ter of a century they probably grew very rapidly, so that they were fair sized hedges 'in the historic days when Georgetown was the court center of the National Capital. Mrs. Sevier has introduced many modern plantings into the garden.
