Medical and dental clinics, foynd in virtually all of the newer schools in Baltimore, Cleveland and other cities, are provided in the new elementary schools to be built under the five-year program. Space also has been re- served for branch public libraries. Adequate Play Space. The new elementary schools will be 16-room units with assembly halls. Tn every case there will be adequate play- ground space surrounding the build in something which ~ the older sichools in the District sadly lack. The space devoted to outdoor creational tucilities in other cities was particu larly noted by the c mittee on its tour and the Washington schools will benefit thereby. Some of the other innovations in the new schogls include glazed brick walls from the bottom of the blackboards to the flc of the classrooms and ceilings without beams. The upper portion of the classroom walls and the ceilings will be finished in white plas- |ter, A greater degree of sanitation will be provided by the glazed brick walls, Mr. Harris belleves. - The old style plaster walls, he sald, soon become dirty and unsightly from fingerprints and pencil marks. The glazed bricks can be washed. The new buildings, too, will have rooms designed especially for special work and study purposes. These same general improvements Mr. Harris plans to carry through all the new junior and senior high schools, with the alm of giving Washington the most up-to-date schoolhouses in the ntry, in order that they may serve a model for school construction for the Nation. —_— The Origin of “Good-Bye.” “Good-bye,” the common farewell expression, is gt a corruption of “good boy,” as some maintain, but a contraction of “God Be With Ye" or “I Commit Thee to God,” which the French have preserved in “Adleu.” Other nationalities have their own va- riations of the expreseion SCOTCH SHOOTING SEASON LURES MANY AMERICANS ‘“Enicker Skirt” Favored by Fair Dianas as Hunters’ Trek to Scottish Moors Begins.
