Royal and Pantages St. " James” Episcopal’ WHN WDAF WDAF KDKA L WCCO W S I Transfer of lfuny to High-Powered Class Lessens Differences Between Groups. Moters. Miles. ‘Three new class “A" broadcasting stations were licensed during the past week by the Department of Commerce and one plant was transferred from class “A" to class “B.” The new class “B" broadcaster is WMBB of Chicago, which will op- erate as before on 500 watts, 250 meters and 1,200 kilocycles. The ad- ditlon of WMBB makes a total of 105 statfons in class “B." In fact, with the transfer of at least one class “A” station to the ranks of high-power broadcasters nearly every week, some of the dis- tinction between the two groups is passing. Until the past few months all class “A" stations operated on a wave length of less than 280 meters and the “B"” broadcasters were all above that mark. Since the class “B'" wave lengths have been exhausted the department has had to grant class “B” licenses to many sfations to which it could not assign a wave length. And even the power distinction has been lessened somewhat since the de- partment has been allowing class “A" statfons to use 500 watts, which is the same as most class stations em- ploy. z The three new class “A" stations licensed are WGBU, Fulford-by-the Sea, Fla., 500 watts, 278 meters and 1,080 kilocycles; KFWU, Pineville, Fla., 100 watts, 238 meters and 1,260 kllocycles, and KFWYV, Portland, Oreg., 5 watts, 212.6 meters and 1,410 kilocycles. The new station will divide time with DCX, Detroit, and wiil op- erate on the same wave length, 517 meters. It will be equipped to use 5,000 watts power. WJR is following the latest princi- ple in radio station construction and location. The station itself will be located in Pontlac, 30 miles from De- troit, and will be connected with the city by means of telephone wires. All the regular programs will be broadcast from Detroit. Technically WJR’s location will be in Pontiac, but for all practical pur- poses it will be in Detroit. This new system is sponsored by the Depart- ment of Commerce and will probably be followed generally in future sta. tion construction, ves the station y's talent for entertainment and yet is far enough away to escape many of the power and high tension noises of the big city.
