THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTO STUDY BOULEVARD ONE KLAN CEREMONY NOT OFFICIALLY SCHEDULED SITES IN VIRGINIA Army Engineers Seek Three Possible Routes for 200- Foot Roadway. : ssances are being made by 1 Army engineers in the territory between Arlington and Falls Church, Va.. for the purpose of selecting three possible routes for a proposed 200. foot-wide boulevard to connect with the approach on the Virginia end of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, 1 in course of construction. The Army engineers have made surveys from the Virginia end of the bridge along the orih side of Arlington Cemetery rough the military reservation t Myer. This section is included the bridge approach, and one of problems that is being faced now he er of going through the ary ervation From the bridge approach end of the military reservation to Falls Chu e engineers have been examining veloped area with a view 1o selecting some route for & boulevard which will connect with the Lee highway ’ tentative routes will these propositions he near futu een Lieut. tor of put and mar re. > O. In order to realize the dream of a great highway from Washington to the South the Arlington Memorial Bridge must be completed, and it is the hope of the Lee Highway Asso- ciation that work on the bridge may be speeded up so the great structure will be completed in five years, in- stead of going ahead under the six- vear program of appropriations now under way. The sociation intends to go before Congress to impress upon the legislative body the need for a roadway of adequate capacity to handle the rapidly increasing ve- hicular traffic now crossing the new Key Bridge. Purely as an economic measure, the gssoclation claims the Arlington Memorial B should be rushed to completion. “Ten thousand automobiles now cross the Key Bridge dail from nearby Virginia,” says Dr. Johnson. What will that traffic be in five vears, with the known rate of auto- mobile traffic increase, and will the Key Bridge be adequate to handle it? Congress cannot justify to the - payers of the nation a leisurely gait in construction of the new bridge on economic and traffic grounds alone. When savings in money and facility in handling traffic can be shown, we think Congress will soon bring it- self to see the need for rapld con- struction of the new bridge. The new roadway itself from the Virginfa end of the Arlington Bridge will be of concrete 18 feet wide. Dr. Johnson however, that only 40 stru have ‘to be ved on one of the proposed routes. “The basis of final decision will not be the importunities of real estate enterprise other factor than proper es " he adds.
