i A steady rainstorm—a tell-tale spot on your You try to get some one to fix it right away. It can’t be done. In the meantime the spot on your ceiling spreads like ink on blotting paper. If the rain keeps up you are in for the expense of plaster patching or re-papering —perhaps both. Is there anything you can do to speed up the repairing? There is. ceiling — a leak OW, thanks to a wonderful com- position called Stormtight, you can stop a leak before it has done any real damage. All you have to do is spread Stormtight over the spots where leaks have developed. Stormtight seals them tightly and makes them imperv- ious to the weather for years. Stormtight is just as efficient for leakproofing an entire roof surface as it is for stopping one leak. If your roof is old and has seen its best days, don’t go to the trouble and expense of replacing that roof. Just cover it with a coat of Stormtight and you will have a tight new surface at a very low cost. Stormtight searches out the holes and cracks as though you poured molten lead over the old roof. When the thick adhesive liquid sets, it forms a one- piece continuous coating. This coat- ing is tough and rubberlike. It will not crack, it will not rot. It expands and contracts with the surface under- neath. It enables you to forget your roofing 'troubles and to postpone the need for re-roofing for many, many years. ; Asingleapplication lasts a long time "—how long, we do not know. We have some roofs here in Belle- ville that were coated with Stormtight in 1915 and so far not a drop of rain has leaked through. Of course, like many other jobs, the more carefully you put Storm- tight on, the longer it will last. But even with ordinary care it will last for years and years. It will go right on, season after season, keeping your roof free from leaks 5 THOR o Y and your mail free from M..‘}_“fi:“ = STIR AND APPH . repair bills. LSox HEATING NECH! INE; L INC. . You don’t have to mix anything, thin anything, or heat, anything. You simply take the cover off, stir thoroughly, pour some on the roof, and spread it with a stiff-bristled broad brush. Then you are finished —and so are the leaks. Is the sun shining? Is the rain com- ing down? Is the snow falling? Never mind; you can apply Stormtight just THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, ' D. ., APRIL 19, 1925—PART 1. in your roof! the same. It can begin its job in any sort of weather. It can begin prevent- ing leaks during the very season or even on the very day when you realize that leaks will be disastrous. Storm- tight sticks fast even to a wet roof. It spreads easily on a cold one. On days when the mercury flirts with zero you can break the ice from your roof and proceed to make it leak-proof. Cover the wire bottom of a sieve with 1109, — Stormtight. After the coating has set, fill the sieve with water. See if any leaks out. A roof that kept the rain out as completely as that sieve keeps the water in, would be a good roof to have. And you can have it. So much for liquid Stormtight. S The plastic Stormtight has the consistency of thick paste or putty. It is spread on with an ordinary mason’s trowel, and in a pinch a knife with a broad blade will do." Extraordi- narily large leaks should be patched with it befors liquid Stormtight is applied. Reline I-Stir it find it much easier to stir than paint. 2-Pour it Tilt the pail, spill out about a quart, and you’re ready for the third and final operation. 3-Spread it out over the roof is, as a matter of fact, even less diffi- cult than whitewashing a fence. After you have done this, you’re finiched. And so are the leaks. ¥ It is to the chemist that we owe the greatpreserva- tive power of Stormtight, which protects your roof from the weather many years longer than paint. Just a few minutes’ stirring and Stormtight is ready for use. Any old stick will do, and you will You needn’t be afraid that Stormtight will harden the moment it gets on the roof. Tom Sawyer could have sold the privilege. Brushing Stormtight worn gutters with plastic. Apply it to drains, leader boxes, cornices and all the other places around a roof that need protection from the elements—the brickwork around the base of chimneys, the flashing around vent-pipes, etc. As Stormtight contains a large amount of asbestos fibre, it resists fire. Burning embers dropped on a Stormtight-covered roof go out without hurting the roof. If you have the least leak in your roof now, you can save money by applying Stormtight at once. When a roof leaks in one place, it is often a sign that the period of decay has set in. That roof will soon develop more leaks until at last you begin to figure on replacing it. A coating of Stormtight, however, will stop the present leaks and prevent any others. It will preserve your roof for many years of addi- tional service. You may have a felt roof or a tin roof. You may have a roof of asphalt or one of rubber composition. It may even be corru- gated iron on your garage, and tar and gravel on your house. But whatever roofing it is, a coat of Stormtight will prevent the leaks that are otherwise sure to come. One reason for the great adaptability of Stormtight is its adhesiveness. As F. P. A. once remarked, “It sticks tighter than a Pull- man window.” It sticks to anything—wood, metal, felt or slate. And it sticks whether the surface is dry or wet. * Neither summer heat ner winter cold causes Z a coat of ‘Stormtight to crack or “alligator.” A piece of tin coated with Stormtight can be bent again and again and 1 coating. The surface of Storm- } tight cures hard, but under- . neath the surface the coating : is as rubberlike and flexible as the day after it was spread on. Therefore, Stormtight ex- pands and contracts under sun and frost without the slightest cracking. A coating of Stormtight frequently makes a roof even better-looking than it was before. Stormtight is made in just the colors that are considered best for roofs—maroon, light red, and green. It also comes in black, of course. Thus Stormtight requires no painting. As a matteér of fact, it shouldn’t be painted. You need spend no money either beautifying it or protecting it. It is already stronger and more durable than any paint and better- looking than most. Thousands and thou- sands of people have rid themselves of one item of expense. This item is the cost of repainting the roof. All over the country there are people who have solved the problem of how to avoid this annual or bi-annual expenditure. The saving amounts to hundreds of dollars, and it is a saving that you, too, can make. A roof covered with Stormtight is good for years and years. A roof covered with Stormtight requires no painting. You can draw your own con- clusions. Which is better, one coat of paint that lasts but'a year or two, or one coat of Stormtight that lasts indefinitely? And as between the cost of putting on a coat of Stormtight and a coat of paint, there is little to choose. Of course the main advantage of Stormtight is that it stops leaks and prevents them, but it also preserves the roof, and one of the rea- sons for the ever increasing use of this re- markable material is the saving in money which home-owners everywhere are making by cutting out the expense of repainting their roofs every year or two. It is always better to prevent leaks than to cure them. You never see a leak until after it has done some damage. You may not see it when it begins and in the meantime it mars tl;e ceiling, the wall, and lomefimg the fur- niture. No need to sacrifice beauty, comes in four colors. To those who are about to repaint their roofs A coat of Stormtight is ten times thicker than a coat of comes in beautiful colors that come even more beautiful with age. A single coating gives you years . and years of service. . vou find it inconvenient to get it fixed before it does more damage. Business men with stored goods should be especially careful. Leaks are not unusual even in new and ex- pensive roofs. Any roofing—whether it be of felt, rubber, asphalt, wood, tin or iron—leaks sooner or later at the seams and nail-holes. Roofing manufacturers, anticipating these leaks, recommend a coat of paint each year. But this frequent painting is expensive. It is unnecessary also. Modern roofs are good roofs. They per- form their job of keeping out the weather far more efficiently than their predecessors. The: wonder is that they don’t last longer. Perhaps the reason is that home-owners are only now finding out how to get the most out of them. Prominent builders say that in the past, three out of four new roofs need not have been put on; that the old roof could easily have been repaired so that it would last years longer. Today home-owners every- oil to one gallon of as Stormtight paint. It Tt was still raining, but she fixed the roof. A few minutes after the leak developed, this enterprising home-owner had it stopped. One of the big advantages Stormtight gives you is the ability to stop leaks as soon as you find them—, before the damage is done. where are learning to increase the life of their roofs by applying Stormtight. They find that Stormtight not only saves the roof but saves them the cost of repainting it every year or two. The cost of Stormtight is really very little. The average roof contains from five to ten squares (a square is 100 square feet). Two to three dollars’ worth of Stormtight covers a square, so your roof can probably be made leakproof at a cost of from ten to twenty= five dollars. A small leak can sometimes bs fized for as little as tweniy-five cents, by the use of a pound of Stormtight Plastic. Stormtight is sold in one- and five-gallon cans and in 64-gallon drums. You can get it at many good stores that sell paint, harde ware, or builders’ supplies, and some of the readers of this advertisement will get it. They will act on what they have read. They will take advantage of the opportunity which Srience has given them. They will make their roofs leak-proof this week. Will you be ons, of them?
