April 18—The birth rate in the farming areas of the Tnited States is 52 per cent greater than i the cities and 24 per &reater than in the villages, according 10 a report published today by the In- stitute of Social and Religious Re search of this city, which gives, under t title ““A Census Analysis of Ame ican Villages,” the resuits of tI tabulation ever made of the United census data for villages. By vil is t communities having ing fron nhabitants. The figures in the report show that at the last census period the average number of children to each 100 m ried women between 15 and 45 3 of ‘age villages was 157, as com- pared with 128 in the c while in the distinctly farming areas the aver age number was 19 Men Outnumber Women. Fry the author of the report s the vahdity the census procedur Wwhich makes no distinction between the data for villages and q: for th rest of the rural population The report states that the census data for 1.75 per cent of the 10,225 villages in the United States hav populations between were tabulated and study, and that thi fully selected to include repre tive villages in the Middle region, the Middle and the Far West West Older Persons Numerous. According to the report, the vil lages have a disproportionately large number of old people as compared with the cities and the farmin ireas Of the men in the villages, 28.5 per cent are 45 years of age or older; while for the United States as a whole, 21.5 per cent of the men are in that age group. Of the women in e villages, 27.4 per cent are 45, or e passed that age, while this is true of only 20 per cent of the women of the entire country. The different regions themselves also show great differences in the com- position of the population. In the Middle Atlantic region, for example, 34.8 per cent of the village men and 36.7 per cent of the village women have reached or passed the 45th year. In the villages of the Middle West, 311 per cent of the men and 29.4 per cent of the women are 45 or older; in those of the Far West, per cent of the men and 23.8 per cent of the women; in those of the South, 21 per cent of the men and 19.4 per cent of the women. The figures show that for every 100 women the Middle Atlantic villages have only 88 men; the villages of the Middle West, 95 men; those of the Far West, 105 men; those of the South, 94 men. The workings of tomorrow are quite | favorable .in the early part of the and reveal that any concentrated | effort, even trough it be along lines | entirely different from those you are | accustomed to, will bring success. In the ‘afternoon the conditions undergo somewhat of a change and not only counsel care and deliberation, but also | demand the exercise of self-restraint and self-control in order to avoid yield- | inz to impulse and the consequent disaster attending such a course. Inf the evening the signs reveal a very || contented atmosphere, which will en-| gender emotions of the best character, awakening affection and _inspiring tha{ which is best in one’s nature. It will not have complete re-| | spect for truthor love of right doing, | but if the proper disciplinary meas- ures are adopted it can be taught | to see the error of its way and easily overcome wealknesses which other- wise would become failings. This Is not a bad sign, but it should not be allowed to carry this desire on its part to extremes and should be forced to associate as much as possible with playmates of an equal age If tomorrow is your birthday, vou have secured a considerable measure of material success, but, in thus at- taining it, have incurred a great deal of criticism and possibly caused some | hardship and suffering.
