More Cootti— Drivers Needed; THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. ¢, MARC OTORS and THE MAN Declared Help to Industry - : X o ALWAYS Rent-a-Car Movement to Be Stimulated as People Learn to Handle Autos Skill- fully—Safety Angle Important. BY WILLIAM ULLMAN. With the registration of cars in America crossing the 17,000,000 mark, attention is commencing to center on the driver, for it is generally be- lisved that most persons who have a | craving to get at the wheel of an ! automobile have already done so This. however, is not saying that a majority of the good drivers are al- ready holders of operators' licenses. Aw & matter of fact, the manufa turers and safety advocates belleve that among the many milllons of people who have never so much as tried to handle a car there are bet- ter drivers than many who now oper- ate cars. The problem, it seems, is to unearth this undeveloped ablility. The demand today for good drivers may accomplish this task in a natural manner, according to those who be- isve that many of the present drivers have gone about as far as they are able in the line of self-improvement Many of the persons who make claim 1o driving ablility are having their licenses revok or suspended and many of them are being barred from the road altogether. Others are find- | ing that increasing age or ilinesses | are rapidly removing them from the ranks. while still others are passing | out of tho picture, according to the laws of nature New Field Developed. ! While the demand for more cor patent drivers is increasing, the fore, the present supply is being thin- ned out in a very natural way. A cordingly, & new field is being de- veloped among those people who do rot drive cars at present and who porhaps feel that they are incapable of doing so. To this end every effort is being made to simplify the controls of the automobile and to make the vehicle itself inherently safer and foolproof. Though it i seldom viewed from this | angle, much of the simplicity that is being urged upon trafiic officials is nothing more nor less than the | process of laying & smoother road | for the people who will be joining the motor ranks in the future. One of the interesting phases of the subject is the development of the | rent-a-car idea. The leading taxicab | interests in the country have gone | into this development quite seriously and have even developed a speci ear to be used for renting purposes The idea is that if you want 10 miles of transportation, and want it in a personal car, all you have to do is 10 50 to the rent-a-car establishment and buy such service just as you would 2o to a store to buy any other commodity—provided you can drive Rests With People. out good drivers it is obvioy such & development mak headway. 1f people cannot drive they cannot undertake tho responsibilities of driving one of these cars, no matter how troubleproof it might be. The success of the rental plan rests with the people who could benefit by It The tax| interests themselves admit that the taxi fleld is limited by reason of the cost of the paid driver. In the taxi it requires one person to drive an- other, whereas in the rent-a-car plan the paid driver is eliminated. Thus for the many thousands of peopls Who can- not afford to own cars, or whose life is such that possession of a personal car would be a burden, it will be necessary to know how to handle a car competent- Iy if personal transportation of the most economical varicty is desired The motor manufacturers have al- ways looked to the competent driver to help cut costs and develop sa’ets, there- by encouraging greater use of the auto- mobile. Many of the people who now possess licenses have been a sad disap- pointment to the industry, and this may explain why the non-motorist is now being looked to in the effort to develop a finer brand of driver Women Get Resalts. the motor vehicle departments r locking the wheel, to the ¢ e S 1ot meas- rapidly rais it is evident that in many American families the real driving talent will be brought to light.
