FIN NEW STOCKS JOIN INDAY'S ADVANCE Fresh Lot of Issues Include Motor, Sugar and Ship Shares, Long Inactive. BY STUART P. WEST. 1 Dispatch to The Star. A February 26.—Opera- tions for the r in the stock market tod; were extended to a fresh lot issues, in which speculation has played little part in the recent trad- ing. These included the motors, a few of the sugars, the shipping shares and a number of industrial special- ties. The big feature was the upbidding of several high-priced stocks of the type of Associated Dry Goods and Nash Motors, where the floating sup- ply has been greatly reduced and the public interest is small. The possi- bility of a capital splitup figured in the buying of nearly all these stocks. The general body of the list was strong, although the volume of busi- ness was comparatively small as it had been the preceding day. Motor Stocks Leaders. Motor stocks were the leaders, follow- ing out a movement which had become well defined toward the close of busi- ness Wednesda. This time, however, it was not stocks like Studebaker, Gen- eral Motors and Plerce Arrow, to which so much attentlon was paid. Rather, the big trading was in low-priced issues which heretofore had not been promi- nent, among them Packard, Hupp and Moon. Willys-Overland preferred ran up sharply. Shipping stocks were in demand under the lead of Atlantic Gulf and West Indies, which crossed 34, Marine preferred was also strong. In Atlan- tic Gulf initiative appeared to "be coming from sources which have been particularly successful in other direc- tions during the recent buil campaign Laclede Shares Stromg. Among the public utilities, Laclede Gas was the feature, with a jump of more than 12 points. People’'s Gas of Chicago went along, and Columbia Gas sold at a new high above 51. There was more activity in Standard Gas and Electric. In the railway section there were few features. Louisville and Nash- ville, which had started up on the previous day, was one of these, jump- ing 2 points on talk of increased dividends. Other members of the railway group held steady most of the time, but showed no disposition to resume their upward movement of a few davs ago. The report of the St. Paul for January made a better show- ing than many had expected. Like- wise, the monthly earnings figures of some of the other carriers, including the Baltimore and Ohio, the New ‘Haven, Lehigh Valley and the Pere Marquette, were higher than for Jan- uary, 1924 Specialties Active, Among the speclaities Remington Typewriter ran up sharply. Asso- ciated Dry Goods shot forward again in remarkable fashion, and May De- partment Stores was also strong. Sears-Roebuck was in demand and Central Leather preferred went higher. Great Western Sugar was a strong spot in its group. Other sugar shares, including Cuba Cane Sugar preferred, were stronger. The weekly statement of the Bank of France threw further light upon the recent decline in francs. With loans to the government stationary, and with no change in loans and dis- counts, note circulation had a further increase. Columbia Gas Strong. Columbla Gas and Electric continued active following the announcement Wednesday that the company had acquired the Dayton Power and Light Company. The Columbia Gas president stated that by “this step the huge natural gas resources of the Columbia Gas system, its present power facilities and those of the Dayton Power and Light, will be unified, and insure the industrial territo served a grea(ly strengthened public utilit MAREKET CLOSES STRONG. OIL BONDS HEAVY AS OUTPUT GROWS BY GEORGE Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February est in the bond trading, on Wednesday had centered traction issues, shifted_today St. Paul and the sugafs. At one stage the St. Paul 4s of 1925 were quite weak. They were off a point and a half at 67, but later these bonds rallied following the pub- lication of the January earnings re- port, showing an increase of’$560,000 gross and $750,000 net, as compared with the month a year ago. The net increase was over 100 per cent Accompanying the general activity in sugar securities there was a strong market for the Eastern Cuba Sugar T1%4s. These bonds were In demand between 1067 and 106%. The Cuba Cane 8s were also distinctly higher, although there was no particular news from the sugar trade to explain the buying. The Third Avenue adjustments, which on. Wednesday had broken sharply, appeared to have reconciled themselves to the cut in the Interest payment. They were selling most of the time around 42. Excitement also quleted down in the Chicago Railway 58, New York, Westchester and Bos- ton 4135 showed the effect of profit- taking. They were off some 2 points from their top. Austrian Ts were fractionally high- er, but the net changes in_the foreign section were as a rule unimportant Peru $s did_rather better. City of Copenhagen 53s were a bit lower. Today's New Offeringw. New offerings today included $30,- 000,000 United States Rubber 6% per cent serial notes to yield from 6.52 per cent.
