FINANCIAL SPECIALTIES LEAD /SPECTACULAR RISE Prices Move Rapidly Upward in Afternoon Trading in Wall Street. BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, November 24.—There was no let-up in speculative activitles on the stock exchange today. The vol- ume of business continued well up to the recent shares had been dealt in by noon, and this rate was maintained pretty well in the subsequent trading. Railway stocks were about evenly divided in their movement, some of the recent leaders falling back quite charp- iy while other members of the group were taken up to record figures. In the industrial section the upbidding one aft- .er another of stocks of the specialty type was again the feature. One of the strongest groups were the rubber and tire shares. Tobaccos also were favor- ites. Rubber Shares Strong. The street was not surprised at the strength of the rubber shares. Such 2 movement has long been anticipated, in consequence of the much better position in the crude rubber trade, with the attending increase in in- ventory values of all companies where crude rubber is important as a raw material. The belief is that whether or not this will be shown in the 1924 statements to any large ex- tent, it will be reflected in 1925, and be an offset to the active competition which for the last few vears has been keeping down profits in the tire trade. Goodyear preferred was up nearly 3 points, U. S. Rubber, Good- rich and Kelly Springfield from 1% to 215. There was active trading also in Fisk Rubber common, anticipating early resumption of the dividends on the preferred. Rail Shares Irregular. rail stocks were extremely variable. The St. Pauls continued to be bought, especlally the preferred, Jooking forward to a very favorable October earnings report which will be published either Wednesday or ¥riday. Seaboard Alr Line preferred was also very strong at a new high, nd so were Western Pacific and Chicago Great Western preferred. On the other hand, there was heavy profit-taking in Rock Island, which nad been the leader on Saturday, and active selling also in Atchison and New York Central. St Louis outhwestern was off sharply and St. Louls-San Francisco reflected in its uncertain fluctuations to difference of opinion as to whether the dividend would be at the rate of 4 or at the rate of 5 per cent. In the first event, the stock around 56 looked to many to be high enough. Allis-Chalmers in New Top. TRecent buying in North American, which carried the stock up from under 35 last week to 40 today, was explained by the action of the direc- tors in declaring a stock dividend which made a cash equivalent at the rate of $3.40 on the vear instead of the previous $2.40. Allis-Chalmers was in demand at a rew top. The report persisted that the company would announce a deal with other interests which would i sult favorably from the stockholders’ atandpoint, Allis will earn approxi- mately $9 a share on the common stock this year. $6 a share was reported on the com- mon. New business has been coming in at record rate for this se: n oi ihe year. Resumption of regular dividends on Fisk Rubber preferred and the payment of something on arrears on The that issue, were confidently predicted | in banking quarters. Fisk Rubber stocks were strong today. There is &n accrual of about 22 per cent on the preferred stock. Earnings have been running close to $15 a share. CLOSE IS. IRREGULAR. Much Shifting From Stock to Stock in Final Trading. By the Associated Press. NEW- YORK, November 24.—“Bull”| operators found it difficult to ad- vance many of the popular railroad and industrial shares today without running into large offerings of stocks, but they were more successful in the low-priced rails and speclalties, more than a score of which were lifted to new peak prices for the year. Sales approximated 2,000,000 shares. The closing was irregular. Fre- quent shifting of speculative opera- tions from one group to another brought about further irregularity in the late trading, with several of the minor specialties showing marked buoyancy. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK—Stocks irregular; two- mcore issues at new highs. Bonds higher; St. Paul issues lead advance; French bonds active. Forelgn ex- changes easier; sterling lower on Egyptian crisis. Cotton advanced; trade buying. Sugar higher; firm spot_situation. Coffee weak; lower Brazillan markets, CHICAGO—Wheat firm; decreased wisible supply. Corn steady; opened weak; rallied sympathy with wheat. Cattle higher. Hogs lower; liberal errivals. MILL WAGES REDUCED. PORTLAND, Me., November 24.—A f¥eadjustment of wages in the cotton mills of Maine went into effect today, ‘with a reduction of 10 per cent. Ap- proximately 13,000 employes in mills in Biddeford, Saco, Lewiston, Augusta, ‘Waterville, Westbrook and Brunswick were affected. The last previous change in wages was in April, 1923, when a 121 per cent increase was ‘given, WILL REDEEM NOTES. NEW YORK, November 24.—John 1. Weeks, president of the Maracaibo 0il Exploration Corporation, an- nounces that debenture notes will be redeemed at par on February 1 next. In the meantime these notes may be ‘onverted into capital stock of the corporation at the rate of one share for each $10 par value of debentures, notice to be given before January 26. e WAGE DEMANDS DENIED. S1D00M0 FRENCH LOANQUIHLYSOLD Oversubscription Is Reported Early in Session of Bond Market. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, Newember 24.—Over- subscription of the new French loan, a spectacular advance in St. Paul bonds and excited trading in some of the other railroad and industrial is- sues were the features of the day in bonds. Books on the French loans were closed before 11 o'clock with an esti- mated oversubscription of around three times and probable allotments of from ‘30 to 40 per cent. These bonds opened on the curb at 94%. against the offering price of 94, and after the first hour were transferred to the stock exchange, where the opening transaction was 941:. This price was fractionally improved later. Bonds Well Placed. The best information was that the bonds had been exceptionally well placed. The success oi the offering stimulated the market for the older French issues as well as for the en- tire foreigm list. The largest gains were made by the French Cities 6s. German 7s were also active. United Kingdom 5%s of 1937 equaled their high of the year. The advance in the St. Paul 4s of 1925 was the sharpest in months. The closing quotation on Saturday was 791; and the first sale today was 801, from which point under excited demand the price advanced to 83, with a substantial reaction later. The next most active St. Paul issue was the convertible 4348 of 1932, which at 64 were up 3% points on the day. A gain of more than 4 points was made in the Puget Sound d4s. The St. Paul refunding 4%s, the long- term issue, had a much smaller rise. This buylng represented confidence that the St. Paul would be able to complete Its refunding operation next year. Anticipation of a favorable October earnings statement, which is dus on Wednesday or Friday, may also have had something to do with the advance. Missouri Pacific, Sea- board and New Haven lssues all showed strength. Packing Issues Stronx. Early strength in the packing com- pany bonds was counteracted when a dispatch from Chicago announced that interest on Wilson & Co. con- vertible 6s would not be paid. The market for the Wilson 6s and 7ls broke sharply. Virginia-Caro- lina Chemical bonds. were strong. What appeared to be concerted buy- ing came Into Plerce Arrow 8s for a gain of over 2 points. Quotations for United States Gov- ernment loans were slightly higher. Rock Island refunding 4s held their recent gain. Today's new issues included $1.- Denver Joint Stock Land Bank 5 per cent farm loan bonds re- deemable in 1934 at 102 PLUME OUTPUT D;DPS. COTTON IS HIGHER AS WEEK BEGING December Notices Feature of Day’s Trading—Steady Liverpool Cables. By the Associated Pres: NEW YORK, November 24.—Cir- culation: of December notices fea- tured the opening of the cotton market today. Early estimates placed them at about 160,000 bales and there was heavy near month liquidation in the early trading. Offerings of December were absorb- ed by trade interests partly against sales of later deliveries at slightly wider differences, however, and the market showed a generally steady tone. The opening was firm at an advance of 4 to 34 points on cover- ing_promoted by falrly steady Liver- pool cables and expectations that the notices would be promptly stopped. Active months sold about 21 to 38 points net higher, but the near month liquidation caused more or less ir- regularity. After seliing at 24.26 January eased off to 24.12, with ac- tive months ruling about 20 to 24 points net higher at the end of the first hour. New Orleans Quotation: NEW ORLEANS, November 2 cotton market here had a firm opening this morning, first trades showing gains of 4 to 20 points despite New York was lower at the start. Notices for 42,000 bales of December contracts were issued here and according to all reports were promptly stopped by big spot interests. New York first reported notices for 30,000 bales issued there, but the total was soon increased, ac- cording to reports, to 150,000 bales. It was understood that the notices were being stopped by spot interests as fast as Issued. The market shot upward right after the call on news of the prompt stoppage of so large a volume of notices, December advanc- ing to 24.50 and March to 24.70, or 50 to 54 points above Saturday’s close.
