CHURCH ALLOVS FOSDEK 10 RESIO Accepts Resignation With Deep Regret—Asks Pastor L to Preach at Times. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 23.—Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick no longer Is spe- cial preacher at the First Presb. tertan Church. His resignation was unanimously accepted at a meeting of the congregation last night. An in- vitation was extended to him, how- ever, to preach at the church “on such Sundays as he finds in con- wventent.” Almost every seat in the church was filled when the Rev. Dr. George Alexander, the pastor, opened the meeting. A letter from Dr. Fosdick, including a copy of a letter to the New York presbrtery’s committee, was read. Dr. Fosdick, in his com- munication declined to renounce his sfMliation with the Baptist Church. Dr. Fosdick was told in a letter ment to him after the approval of the report which accepted his resigna- tion: 2 “We will suffer an irreparable loss 1f you leave us entirely. Moreover, the Presbyterian Church at large will suffer seriously. Thousands of young men and women, attracted by your preaching and writing, will drift away from any church assoctation whatever. But the greatest loss will be to the cause of Christian fellow- ship and church unity, to which you and we are committed.” | can \ : / / THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1924. AUTHORITY ON OUTDOOR LIFE TO WRITE ARTICLES IN STAR Will H. Dilg, Noted Fisherman, Will Furnish New Series on “The Call of the Outdoors” for Newspaper’s Readers. The varied delights of the outdoor world and the perfl that these joys are underzoine in America through forest destruction, stream pollution, and despoliation of breeding grounds of fish and game are to be brought to the attention of the readers of The Star In a special feature entitled “The of the Outdoors” and written Ly Will H. Dilg, president of the Walton League of America. The first installment was printed in The Star of October 21. Tt is planned to print the subsequent ones at frequent intervals, if not every day. Every fisherman has heard of Will Dilg, but in addition to being a noted angler and author on angling mat- ters, he is an all-round outdoorsman, hunter, camper, lover of wild life and, above all, conservationist. He has’ speclalized more or less in bass ing; bass are the leading fresh water game fish of this part of the country. But if there is any varlety of finny prize that he hasn't caught, it is only because that particular species will not bite. A few years ago a crowd of Washington anglers on the upper Potomac watched Dilg, in company with several other experts, making a moving picture reel for Field and Stream. In holes in which the local fishermen were getting two or three a day Dilg and his com- panions were hooking black bass at almost every cast. It was a most Im- ive object lesson as to what plus knowledge, plus proper kle could accomplish. Dilg’s greatest bid for fame is his last June by both House and Senate of tha upper Mississipp! wild life and fish refuge bill, a bill sponsored by the Izaak Walton League, of which he was founder and first president, and a highly important plece of con- servation legislation. This measure carried an appropriation of $1,500,000 to purchase and protect from drain- age the river bottoms In the upper valley, which represent almost the last stand of wild life in that re- gion and absolutely the last stand of warm-water game fish. It is esti- mated that, under Federal control, the Bureau of Fisherles can, within the next five vears, take from these bottoms no fewer than 1,000,000,000 four and six-inch black bass with which to replenish diminishing stocks all over the United States. These bottoms are, in addition, a paradise for water fowl and for small fur- bearing animals. Include News Features. The new feature will include actual news, for its author is in constant touch with state, national, community and private recreational enterprises, with conservation and sporting con- ferences and other similar develop- ments. It will include Information calculated not only to give the be- ginner valuable data, but also to keep the experienced outdoorsman in- formed on the newest wrinkles. It will include chapters devoted to varl- ous game animals, birds and fishes. The subject of conservation will, of course, have a commanding position In the list of toplcs to be treated. as editor of Outdoor America, official organ of the Izaak Walton League, Mr. Dilg will offer comment, born of actual knowledge, on every phase of the outdoors. “To the best of my ablility T will pass on those things I have seen and learned,” says the author in discuss- ing the series. “I am especially anxious these little articles may in some way help to Introduce to the outdoors those who, perhaps, have not heard its call. I want to get let- ters on outdoor subjects. If there are questions about any of the things I discuss, I want to hear them, and will answer as soon as I can, either through this column or by individual letter.” REGIONAL ANESTHETIC USE GROWS RAPIDLY Leaves Patient Conscious, But Eliminates Pain—To Be Used in Many Operations. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 23.—From 30 to 80 per cent-of the surgical opera- tlons of the future will be performed with the aid of a regional anesthetic which eliminates pain, but leaves the patient conscious, according to Dr. Gaston Labat, French surgeon, who addressed the convention of the Eastern Society of Anaesthetists yes- terday. Dr. L. C. Smith of Ashland, Ky., said that at the hospital In Ashland more than 85 per cent of the oper- ations are already performed under a regional anesthetic.
