TAMPA, Fla., October 23.—Wind of 100 miles an hour or more was en- countered by the Shipping Board steamship Ophis last Monday about 30 or 40 miles north of Tortugas, Capt. John Polhemus reported on ar- rival at Port Tampa yesterday. The Ophis passed close to the cen- ter of the hurricane early Monday, tho captain said, and the barometer dropped to 28. There was no anem- oter on the ship with which to measure the wind, Capt. Polhemus, i experiences with said he estimated the wind to nearly 115 miles an hour.
