"8 BULL, RUNNING AMUCK IN CITY, THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTOXN, D. C.. OCTOBER 5. stretches, 1924—PART 3. | AS VACATION ENDS Checking Over Often Avoids| A Expense and Worry, B W.A.T.A. Asserts. What attention should the car re- eeive after it has served its owner over a vacation period? The customary procedure is to have the car looked over before the trip, but, w that is necessary, the serv- jee committee of the Washington Au- | tomotive Trade Association says that inspection of the car upon its return to the city-is not to be overlooked. In a bulletin just issued, it is Pointed out that systematic checking over of the car will forestall a lot of expense and trouble. The following are among the W. T. A. recom- mendations “Don't make the mistake of return- inz home in the belief that the car docsn’'t need greasing because the matter was attended to before you started. Maybe you covered 1.000 or 2,000 miles in that period Brakes May Need Adjustment. "he brakes are quite likely to need adjustment if you have traveled in mountainous country. “The battery. should be the first thing to look at, for the chances are that vou have forgotten all about it on yvour vacation. “Have the car polished and the wheels and running gear washed. Just because the car back home again is no reason to think that yvou will have plenty of time to keep it in order. You're usually busiest after returning from a vacation. g “If you've been to the seashore see that all traces of rust are removi from the trimmings. You'll even find rust in the distributor and other vital laces. P Have the oil drained off and the crankcase cleaned out with a quart of fresh oil before replenishing the supply. You pick up a lot of dirt on a tour. “It is true that on your tour vou Xeep adding fresh oil to make up BROUGHT TO BAY BY AUTO Houston Police Chase Infuriated Animal as Noonday Crowds Scurry to Safety—Fusillade of Bul- lets Ends Wild Pursuit. i In these days of high-powered motor cars, traffic laws, parking ordinances, no-accident weeks, anti- epeed campaigns and other fads and fancies of the workaday world, it is seldom that a motorist in the far- thest reaches of his fancy dares to think of using his automobile as a rarin’, tearin’, buckin’ broncho, fit for capturing and killing a real live bull. Somehow or other it has been impossible for an automobile to ralse on its hind wheels and do a back flip-flop or turn quickly and race in the opposite direction when danget threatens. 1In this the horse is still supreme. However. a seven-passenger auto- mobile, used as a police emergency machine in Houston, Tex., emulated Bill Hart's dashing horse the other day, and like a bucking broncho went on a hunt for a wild bull, according to tory received here this week by T. T. Mott, local Paige and Jewett distributor. The bull, black, ferocious and mad with the heat, brpke from its pen, and enjoying its freedom to the utmost, made its way to the crowded down town streets. One frightened woman called for the police, and in lieu of a horse a Paige emergency car. load- ed with police, riot guns and new for oil that is burned off in constant driving, thus making it possible to run longer without actual chang- ing the oil in the conventional way, but better start fresh again upon your return “The spark plugs will need clean- ing and possibly the carburetor will need a little attention if the weather has moderated. “It is often true that car needs more attention upon its return than before it starts on a trip, because when the trip is over the owner is likely to be carcless about his car care and imagine that because he treated his car considerately before he started it should be eternally grateful.” | was over. paper reporters, “shoot the “bull.” Now while the emergency car is not painted red, it is maroon in color and on a hot day maroon was red enough for the bull. So, when the infuriated animal saw the machine it charged, but a quick twist of the wheel sent Mr. Bull spinuing to the side. ‘Then the animal started its retreat, dignified as only a bull can be dignified, running down the sidewalk. sending noonday shoppers. bobbed- haired flapper stenographers, clerk. and all the rest scurrying to safety ¥rom the sidewalk the bull repaired to the street. The emergency car, still in its wild west role of a bucking broncho, start- ed in pursuit. The machine was driven alongside the pursued, while police stood on the running board firing at the animal as they rode along. 7 Eventually, peppered with bullets. the bull fell dead, and the danger Then the police, unharmed. toward more peaceful pur- like hunting criminals.
