My faithful wife, Matilda, beheld me thus em- ployed, and she, with my Aunt Hil- da,” were simply overjoyed. “It's good to see you halting your way- ward course,” they said; “it’s good to see you salting the groats, all plugged with lead.” All habits stick the tighter, the longer they're pur- sued, and son the dames grew whiter for lack of wholesome food. I saved the dimes with ardor, I nailed the cents with care, and oftentimes the larder was ghastly, grim and bare. I felt the teardrops trickle adown my furrowed cheeks, when 1 must spend a nickel to buy a bunch of leeks. “You chill me and dishearten,” I cried, in anguished notes, when asked to buy a carton of Dimbat's shredded oats. And now my wife implores me to quit the (hn(!) game; “Your prudence shocks and bores me,” 1 hear my aunt ex- claim. “To make your pile grow taller you go to wild extremes, and now you pinch a dollar until the eagle screams. And ere you started saving what coin the law allows we used to sce you waving your bundle at the cows. I mutter as I wander in shabby hat and gown, ‘I'd rather see him squander than salt the rubles down.’ (Copyright) WALT MASON. WHEELER LAUDS OYSTER FOR NEW DRY ACT PLAN Giving Policemen Powers of Fed- eral Agents Declared Good Move for Enforcement. Wayne B. Wheeler, general coun- sel and legislative superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League, congratu- lated Commissioner Oyster yesterday on the success of his plan in having 27 picked detectives clothed with the authority of Federal revenue agents. “This will mean much to law en- forcement within the District,” said Mr. Wheeler in a letter to the com- missioner. “It ought to prevent the frequent dismissal of cases on the ground that the Federal agents are not there when the cases are called. “It will speed up law enforce- *HE EVENING STAR, WASHINGION, D. C. | |EMBASSY ABOLITION IN TURKEY HELD UP T. S. Unwilling to Reduce Envoy to Rank of Minitser at This Time, Britain Is Told. The replacement of all embassies at Constantinople by legations, it is understood, has been tentatively sug- gested by Great Britain in notes de- livered to all the powers concerned. At the same time Ronald Lindsay, the new British envoy to Turkey, has been accredited to Constantinople with the rank of minister. The British note points out that the Turkish government is no longer at Constantinople, but at Angora, and that the Turks have always shown extreme unwillingness to consider even the possibility of a return to the former city. Under these conditions, it is contended, the expensive upkeep of embassies in Constantinople is not justified and, moreover, the note in- timates that such a measure might induce the Turks to reconsider their decision not to move from Angora. The State Department is unwilling to discus the matter, as such a change would have to be carefully considered in connection with the future policy of the United States toward Turkey. It is understood also that as con- gressional sanction would have to be obtained for any such step, the State Department will consult leaders in the Senate before coming to any decision on_the point. The French government, although it has not as yet replied formally to the note, is apparently unfavorable toward the proposal on the ground that it would involve too great a change in diplomatic custom and would not, in its opinion, recall the OME IN —and isspect our stock of Blank Books before you go elsewhere.
