" LOGIC" SAVES §100 FOR POULTRYMEN Cut Funds for Fighting Mos- quitoes to Half,-as Only * . Females Are Dangerous. O+ Consolidated Press. CEDAR GROVE, N. J., July 10.—An organized outpouring of the outraged itizens of this attractive little farm- ng village, which lies in the valley letween the Orange and Preakness mountains, was quelled today by the heer power of science. No demonstration will be held and the Cedar Grove Board of Poultry Trade, will be permitted without pro- test, verbal or physical, to reduce its annual appropriation for mosquito extermination from $200 to $100 When word of the action seeped through the village it was at first received with doubt; then, when the rumor was verified, with amazemer t. which speedly developed into general indignation. Cedar Grove has always prided her- | sc1f upon the scarcity of her mosqui- 10s as compared with communities lying nearer the breeding ground of the zenus oulex in the great Jersey neadow tract. But, just the same, she has more than $100 will kill. Mosquitoes Are Costly. Even two hundred dollars have in the past proved barely sufficient to insure the village that soporific ease and comfort and peace which are the chief claims of Cedar Grove as a summer resort As for that $100 appropriation, it was nothing short of a treacherous delivering of Cedar Grove over to the unceasing rapacity of the winged pest. Feeling culminated today in a state of public mind which placed the poul- trymen and the mosquito in practical- v the same class. And since the chicken raisers are more easily as- sailed than mosquitoes, the criminal record of this ordinarily peaceful rural community might well have borne some analogy to the blotter of the West 30th street police station in New York had it not been for Soapy ckworth, secretary of the Poultry Association. abundantly armed with scientific data, when approached at Captain’s grocery store and general forum this morning by a committee of citizens organized impromptu un- der the leadership of big Ed Weagle Females Are Deadly. ‘Don’t get excited, boys.” Clock- worth held up his hand and gave pause to the swiftly developing un- rest. “We've beefl looking into this mosquito question and what do we find? Eh? What do we find? Why, we find that it is only the female of the species that does the biting.” “You get out!” Weagle advanced two menacing steps toward the poul- trymen. .'if vou don’t believe it. look Clockworth held forth a pamphlet dealing with the insect in question, and there it was, sure enough, right down in cold print Only the female of the species was deadly “So." said_Clockworth, “we decided what as the use in spending a hun- dred dollars extra when it was only the she mosquitoes that did the bit- ing. Who cares about the males so long as they don’t bite?” “We " “Weagle scratched his head. “Well, looks like there is some- thing in what you say.” Every one else thought so. Now Cedar Grove is priding itself upon its restraint in first looking into a matter before acting. e Traps baited with catnip are being used with much success in catching ain lions in Colorado. John Crown, with his head heavily bandaged because of injuries which he charged had been infiicted by Po- licemen S. F. Smith and D. W. Coombs of the tenth police precinci when they arrested him the night of July 6 at his home in Biair road northwest on a charge of disorderly conduct, was tried in the District of Columbia branch of the Police Court today before Judge Gus A. Schuldt. After taking evidence of a large number of witnesses on both sides, he was acquitted. The case attracted general attention and consumed more than an hour and a half. Edward W. Thomas, assistant corporation coun- sel, prosecuted the case, while Attor- ney James A. O'Shea represented the defendant. The policemen testified that Crown had created a disturbance in his home on Blair road and that the had arrested him outside of his home and were forced to subdue him. Neighbors testified that the police- men went to Crown's home, broke in his back door and beat Crown up with their clubs in the kitchen of the defendant’s home. Crown, on the witness stand, told the same story. LUMBER MEN COMPLAIN. Petitions on behalf of half a hun- dred Alabama lumber interests as| ing suspension of proposed new schedules increasing lumber freight rates from four southern states to eastern trunk line points were re- ceived by the Interstate Commerce Commission toda Lumber interests throughout the south have protested against the in- creased rates which are to become effective July 20 and have asked that the effective date of the in- crease be postponed until further hear- ings can be had The proposed new schedules in- crease the lumber rates from one to 8% cents per hundred and were drawn up by Whe railroad under a decision of the commission. The com- plainants against the new rates con- tend that the terms of the decision were not strictly followed by the road in making the new rates.
