ZIONISTS DROPPING | DREAM OF KINGDOM Jews From Western Coun- tries Will Not Adapt Selves - to Palestinz Conditions. BY CONSTANTINE BROWN. Bpecial Corespondence of The Star and Chicago Daily News. JERUSALEM, Palestine, June 1.— On visiting some of the new calonies in Palestine one cannot help admir- ing the Jews who have settled here since 1913, Many of them came from Poland and Rumania, where they Wwere engaged in business, and never had an ax or a shovel in their hands. They were brought into this desolate country and given patches of land. They had to bulld shacks to live in, barns for their prospective crops and Wells to water their land. Most of them had never done any manual la- ®or and naturally found the work dis- tasteful. They had other dreams about the “promised land.” The fig and olive trees described in the Zion- ist pamphlets existed a few thousand Years ago, but many wars and suc- cessive invasions by twenty or more races had destroyed them. “The ground is here the immi- grants were told; “it is up to vou to Tebuild all the former prosperity.” Many became discouraged and left hen they had enough money to pay their passage back to the countries from which they came. Twenty thou- sand or more were penniless and had to make the best of a bad job. And one must give them full credit for having done it well. All over the Jewish homeland one sees cultivated territory. Instead of the Arab wood- en plow drawn by an ass and a woman scratching the soil superficially, one sees good American modern plows drawn by well groomed mules Arabs Dislike Innovations. The innovations introduced by the Jews are not pleasing to the Arabs. They cannot understand that, instead of having the womenfolk stamp on a pile of wheat, one should use thresh- ing machines to get out the grain. Still less can they understand why window screens and powders should be used to prevent millions of insects from entering the houses and annoy- ing and infecting the people. The dream of the Zionists of recon- structing the Jewish kingdom is rap- idly fading, but it {s making room for the more practical idea of giv- ing to a certain class of Jews from eastern Europe a chance in a country where they can live free from preju- | dice on account of their race and| relizion | The last few years have proved that Jews from western countries where they enjoy the same rights and privileges as do other nationals will not adapt themselves to Palestine conditions. There is no room here for traders and peddlers, but only for sturdy workers of the land. “In Pt PEERS IN & WINDOW BUT CANT GET A 600D OBSERVES M5 SU6T HIS WIFE GOING INTD PANTRY SNAPS PINGERS AND UTTERS LOW PST-PST’ T GET HER ATTENTION we shall talk about ruling the country. | f = = We may then consider what to do to set up the new Jewish state. We do not expect, however, that our num- bers will increase by colonization from the outside. We must wait until our population is increased by Jews born and brought up here.” British Control Essential. Until then the hope of the Jews to keep what they have is in the British mandate. That is their only protec- tion against destruction by the Arabs. || The British know it and do not mean to give up Palestine for many years | They let the Arabs talk | about self-determination and an Arab | f to come. <+ate, but they do all they can to win their side the native population ‘he British grip on Palestine is strong and ruling this country is eas- ier on account of the dissensions among the various sections of the heterogenous population. Palestine in an Arab confederation or as an_independent state would cease to be in British hands.
