*LOVE OF BROTHER FALS, NOOSE NEAR Russell T. Scott, Doomed to Dié, Says Elder, Fugitive, Commltted Murder. :\HOPES OTHER PETURNS Condemned Man Turned Thief After Failing in $2,000,000 Venture. By Consolidated Press. CHICAGO, July 10.—The failure of “brotherly love” to come to the fore in a crisis has brought Russeii T. Scott, former twenty-nine-vear-old president of a $10,000,000 contracting corporation, within the shadow of the gallows Sentence already has been passed condemning the young adventurer to be hanged, and the short continuance \ granted by the court to permit the agd father of the condemned man to locate his older son Robert, in a final effort to save Russell from hanging, is about at an end. Robert is a fugitive from justice. The appeals of his father and of his brother have gome unanswered. His family obligations he regards of less importance than the chance of los- ing his life by a trial. Russell main- tains that it was the elder brother who fired the shots that killed Joseph Maurer, young drug clerk, slsin three months ago during a hold-up of a downtown pharmacy. Brotherly Love Fails. _The father, a Detroit hotel clerk, has been confident all along that Robert would come back here in an effort to save the life of his brother. He has repeatedly told how the two boys have always been the closest of pals, with Robert at all times watch- ing out for the interests of his younger brother. But he judged brotherly love to be stronger than 4rluallly has proved it. Now about to hang. the young man scans the events of the past year that have brought him down from a mil- lionaire to the confessed status of thief and murderer. Only a little more than twelve months ago he was behind a mahogany des! directing t the affairs of Russell T. Scott, Inc. which _held a contract for construc- tion of a $30,000,000 bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. He could tell of conferences with inter- national financiers, of dickerings with government officials and of ma- neuverings among . leaders of the business world. v Failed for $2,000,000. But his scheme turned out to be \ the “bubble’ it had been termed by conservative business men, and he failed for $2,000,000. Then a. Boston woman obtained a $10.000 judement against him for breach of promise. Urable to pay, Russell left the millionaire class, joined with his brother and set out as a thief. He confessed to twenty-five “jobs,” most of them small hald-up affairs. when arrested here after the killing of Maurer. This thiavery had kept him in money and moonshine. And to the latter he attributes a large part of his downfall. His father also argues that drink got the better of him and led to crime. ate, an end to it all came s ooting to death of Maurer. hotel key left in the overcoat he forgot in his haste to leave the scene of the crime led to his capture, and a loaded revoiver, one chamber ex- ploded, furnished the circumstantial evidence needed to tie the erime to Russell. Court Passes Judgment, When broughi to trial, he followed advice of his counsel and pleaded Zuilty to the murder, confidently ex- pecting leniency from the court. But Judge Lindsay twok the almost un- Drecedented action of sentencing the man to death without a jury trial, r "“It geems that the idea prevail the judge said, “that gunmen oan come to Chicago, erpetrate crime and receive lemiancy. This is the case of a man whw, of his own will, elected to be an eni*my of society and coughz revenge om society. There been asked, led the judge, however, to grant a contiiuance €0 that new evidence might he introduced. Rus- scll and his father counted en the older Robert to came back to give the evidence that wou\d save the younger brather. But the time has about run out. GEORGE V.
