In Capital March 27| i Afternoon Program Planned | at White House in Honor of Coo]idges. Alumni. The Amherst College Musical Club will appear in Washington on Thurs- day, March 27 where they are sched- uled to give two concerts under the direction of Harry S. Woodard, Am- herst assisted by G. Tracy Cold- ren, | The first concert will be in the east | room of the White House with Mrs. | Coolidge as ho: Amherst College | being the Alm er of both theil President and Mrs. Coolidge, and the | second concert will be at Rauscher's | in the evening and will be followed || | by @ dance. | Amherst is known throughout the country as the “singing college of i New England” and is thi ar rep- | resented by one of the b organizations in its history. i An extended southern tour has been ! arranged for the clubs at Easter time, and they come to this city on, the second day. In preparation for || the trip there has been diligent prac- || tice on the part of the men. As a re- ||}l sult they have attalned a higher | standard of excellence than ever be- ! fore and their engagements thus far have met with unparalled success. First to Enter Field. In addition to Washington the year's schedule includes among others engagements at the Green Brier, White Sulphur Springs, The Somerset, Boston, |}| Richmond, Va, as well as smaller ! towns and cities throughout the east. || The clubs bring with them a rep- utation gained through a hal cen- tury of distinguished activitiy in the musical field for Amherst was the first college in the United States to possess a musical organization. The Amherst clubs were the first and are, with the exception of Harvard, the only American college musical clubs to tour England, and their reception in English cities was ample reward for their ambitious undertaking. Advance information credits the clubs with an excellent program and & remarkably versatile personnel. The glee club, under the leadership of H. W. Rogers of Minneapolis, Min., has been materially aided by the ad- dition of several new and falented members. The numbers to be pre- sented include “Deep River” by Bur- |/} leigh, “Jolly Good Ale,” composed for the club by Charles 'W. Cobb, Am- | herst, '97, its director, and numerous || college songs, among them the fa- mous “Lord Jeffrey Amherst,” sald by | Owen Wister to be the best piece of | college music ever written. The club has also revived the old octet and has found that it is being en- thusiastically received by every au- djence. Mandolin Club To Play. The Mandolin Club is led by L. Li | Hall of New Rochelle, N. Y. and plays numbers of a semi-classical, | popular, and collegiate. Among its selections are the “K miri Love Song.'” “Marcheta,” by Scvhertzinger, >eter Gink,” adapted from the Pq iynt Suite, and the “College Medley.” The club is aug- mented by vialins, guitars, cello, ban- Jos, saxophones, cornet, clarinet, traps and piano. The cight-picce dance _orchestra, | known a5 “Lord Jeffrey's Serenaders' will appear with the clubs. The ser- enaders are one of the best known college orchestras in the east and are ih_constant demand in Springfield, ‘Williamstown and other cities in the vicinity of Amherst, as well as on the campus. e whole oragnization presents a ‘well rounded and universally accepta- ble program, and will afford an ex- cellent entertainment for its audi- ences.
