The girl, at the wheel of her car, was passing when the officer halted her with raised hand and a touch of his cap. “This lady is a stranger and in trouble, and as she doesn't know her way about the | to 'ask if you would be kind enough - to take . her to police head quarters—I think they can help her there.” The Ruth girl was glad to do the favor—being that -sort of girl—and the woman explained her condition something like this: “We live on a farm in Virginia. husband was very Il there, and us he had been a soldier I wrote to_the government about him and the War Department sent down a doctor, W brought him to a hospital here! little girl and I wanted to see him but the trip cost so much more thi 1 expected that it left me no mon to buy my ticket home.” Instead of followlng the officer's instructions, Ruth took them over to the Union station, gave the woman all the money she happened to have— $12—and said just the right and com- forting thing to the stranded one's tremulous promise to repay the loan as soon as she could get the money. And_that would be all there is to ray about it, except that when it comes to beauty a Ruth girl's soul may outglory even her pinky cheeks and eyes with sparkles in them. Also, to show that {ngratitude is not as universal as the pessimist makes it out to be, the little country woman has been sending the gir fresh eggs from her farm. * % * ¥ TWOMAN cloaked In expensive fur | <3 that called for a limousine rather 1han the snow-powdered umbrella she stood under waited on the platform in front of ths Willard Hotel until a car came along. Then she asked the conductor: “Will_this car take me to Conti- nental Hall?" Tt would not. It was going to | Georgetown by way of the Avenue, | while the F and G line is nearer to the hall by at least six yards, and probably an inch or two over, so the conductor clipped back: “Take the next car.” The woman waited in the snow that was trying its best to rain until the next car stopped. It was a 1ldth street router, but she got on it in obed- ience to the conductor's instruction. Which isn’t much of an incident to tab down here, but will undoubtedly show to advantage when the woman gets back to her home state, and, as a leading officer in one of the most important organizations in the coun- try, lets its membership know just what she thinks of the way we run cars in this town. * ¥ % E was undoubtedly the finest young man at the concert. And he knew it. His clothes were of mati- nee cut and color; the jonquil in his buttonhole was a spring poem, by nature: his cane was the latest thing in silver-topped switches and his col- lar cost 25 cents. H There was no doubt about the price, because the young man had forgotten to take the tag from the back button- hole, and it lay conspicuously on the collar of his coat. . A motherly spinster behind him was dying to take it off, but the girl with her protested: “Oh, leave him alone, aunty. What" the use of interfering with a fellow when he's happy.” Aunty explained that she wanted ( to save him from ridicule later on. “What's the use of making him feel ridiculous right now? Let him enjoy his pipe dream in peace.” And aunty let him. All the same, when the young man betrayed symp- toms of going out for the intermis sion the motherly spinster touched his arm, and leaning over, explained. Hle let her tuck the tag out of sight, and with a poor show of enjoying the little joke on himself. departed. And the girl said, by way of prophecy: “He won't come back. People al- ways resent a kindness like that. I bet you he won't come back.” ‘And he didn’t. * ¥ X % *A COUPLE entered a motion picture theater before the performance began. Both were plain and not over young, and_anybody could tell they had to count their pennies. But: Once they were seated together, the man took two slabs of gum from his pocket, passed one to his_obvious wife and helped himself to the other. And for_the next five minutes they 7alked like good old chums and chewed and chewed and chewed. To chew things in public is too awful to talk about, and yet you can't always go by appearances. A woman in a seat behind, who wouldn't be caught dead doing such an unpleasant thing, felt a sort of homesick stabbing at her heart, fo the sharing of the gum meant com- radeship and a_ whole lot of other things that stand for loyalty and love. And no matter how perfect a citizen vou may be or how entirely genteel in your scorn of chewing gum, if you live in a solitary place called Lone- some Land—never mind about the map—you somehow feel that com- radeship is the splendidest thing in all the world.
