NEW YORK, January 3.—“Dead man's basin” at the Battery, the government's internment place for captured rum craft, was emptied yes- terday durlng an auction, attended by 500 men and two women, in which sixteen bullet scarred smugglers of holiday liquor were knocked down for $5,982, The auctioned craft were a matley fleet. Some were former pleasure cruisers, trim and- stanch, buy ecry- ing for paint. Others were wide walsted fish boats converted into rum carriers by the Installation of powerful engines. There were a few of the “K" type of speed craft built espectally for running the rum pa- trol blockade, with hydroplane keels and twin airplane motors.
