S i Mrs. J. DUTLER WRIGHT, Wife of the third assistant Sec.rcianj o fstate, Social Week in Capital - Made Interesting by Variety of Activities Murs. Coolidge Greeted With Ovation at Chrys- anthemum Show, Where Matchless Blossom Is Named for Her. SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. OLITICS, social life and appeals to the artistic, like Korshetz’s Ukrainian National Chorus, all combined a fitting preliminary last week to the announcement of the official program for state re- | v ceptions and dinners which will come from the White House this week. In the meantime the President and Mrs. Coolidge daily gain | closer touch with the life of the Capital, and the public keep a keen eye out for their appearance on the streets. When Mrs. Coolidge reached the propagating houses where the annual chrysanthemum show of the Department of Agriculture was opened Tuesday she met with a veritable ovation from the several hundred persons assembled there. The Secre- tary of Agriculture and Mrs. Wallace received her, assisted by their daughters, and her admiration for the matchless' blossom named for her was apparent throughout her visit. PROPOS of the state entertainments at the White House, it is cer- tainly known that they will begin in December and that Thursday is the day selected for the entire state series of receptions and dinmers. Thursday was the day selected in severa! former administrations and al ways has brought a protest from the women of the Senate whose day at home it is. However, there is no day of the week which might be selected that is not the day at home for some important branch of official society except Saturday. IOUNT APPONYT and his daughter, Countess Marika Apponyi, coming early in the week, met with several interesting entertainments at the Hungarian legation and elsewhere, while a much livelier program awaited Princess Borghese. There were dinner and luncheon parties for her and a riot of the artistic and grotesque mingling in the dinner and dance given for her at the Purple Iris Halloween night. Adding another note of interest to the week was the assembling here of investment bankers, whose visit added an unusually lively feature to the social life of resident society. ‘EVERY day adds some new interest in the ranks of debutantes, and one of the particularly interesting groups will include the debutantes who are not having a formal coming-out party, but mingling quite gen- erally with the buds of the season and entertaining and being enter- tained. Heading this list is Miss Ruth Wallace, daughter of the Secre- tary of Agriculture and Mrs, Henry C. Wallace, and the only cabinet bud of the season. Miss Wallace will be present in the blue room at the White House during the official season, will, with her sister, Miss Mary ‘Wallace, assist her mother on her days at home and will go about quite generally with the debutante set. rs. Wallace will also entertain for her daughter with one large tea or dance. Another charming girl who will be about with the buds, but without a formal coming out, will be Miss Eugenia Lejeune, dauqhte.r of Maj. Gen. and Mrs. John A. Lejeune, for whom her parents will give a large dance at the marine barracks late this month, with various other entertainments interspersed. \ L E chairman of the republican national committee and Mrs. John T. Adams have a daughter of the debutante age, Miss Elizabeth Taylor Adams, who will be presented to their friends in December, She is a: graduate of Miss Master’s School, at Dobbs Ferry, and will be one of the | most popular of the girls new in Washington society. Miss Anna S, Larner, daughter of Mr. and M ohn B. Larner, and Miss Elizabeth Haynes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry V. Haynes, have been added to the list of local buds, and Mrs. Hare Lippil i i b arde vy ¢ Lippincott will have with her two : DANCING events center about Thanksgiving night, with the evening' before devoted almost entirely to the annual Thanksgiving eve ball i for the benefit of the Episcopal Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.
