Upon the request of his uncle, the Bishop of Ermeland, to become his physiclan, Copernicus returned that year to his native country and lived at the episc pal palace of Heilsberg until his uncle's death in 1512. Epoch-Making Treatise. Then he returned to Frauenburg, ap- plying himself vigorously to his capitu- lar duties. Administrative and political conditions he worked under were very harassing. From the observatory he had bullt for himself in Frauenburg he sought to test with imperfect instruments the truth of his theory opposing Ptolemaic doctrines of early date. Continuously, for a number of years, he spent all his fres moments on, the elaboration of his helllocentric the- ory. ‘The epoch-making treatise in which it was set forth was Wrtually finished in 1530, a brief popular ac- count of its purport being written by Copernicus in that year.
