SAG R &t T & " i :Brilliant Society Events Feature the Beginning of Midwinter Week Program .ESplendid Reception in Honor of Secretary and t Mrs. Hudhes, and Other Notable Functions in List of Attractions. SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. ASHINGTON society started out on a wild orgy oi entertain- ment Morday night such as was not known on any previous night of the winter season. The Washington Opera Company, = a splendid reception in the Pan-American Union building in tHonor of the Secretary of State and Mrs. Hughes, and with the Central {American delegates to the conference as hosts; a reception at the Con- igressional Club in honor of the Speaker and Mrs. Frederick H. Gillett, and ~the Southern ball, all being the larger affairs, while dinner parties and jsupper parties both prevailed in unusual numbers. Of course, the recep- ition at the Pan-American Union was given the preference, about 2,000 iguests passing in brilliant review before the hosts of the evening. (5 “‘WIHLE there is nothing like the rush of Monday night on for this 17" week, Wednesday night being kept open almost exclusively for the 1Ghild Welfare ball at the New Willard Hotel and the dinners preceding it, ithere is quite enough in number and importance to fili the days and Alights comfortably. Today Representative and Mrs. Frothingham' are jeptertaining the Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge, and chief of the Cool- }idges’ hosts during this week will be the Postmaster General and Mrs. {iHubert Work, who will have them to dine Tuesday evening. Thursday “mtight the Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge will themselves be hosts, en- #ertaining at an official dinner members of the cabinet and their wives. H H NUMBER of unusually interesting early dinner parties will precede 5% the Child Weliare ball, the guests from these, however, arriving suf- iciently early to witness the beautiful pageant. For those who wish only ito witness the pageant, which is a carefully arranged and beautiful one, iwith more than a hundred prominent society folks in the cast, and not iattend the ball Wednesday night, ball tickets will be good for the pageant l?imw to be given in the New Willard ballroom Tuesday afternoon. Al- :most the entire official and social world will be present Wednesday night, :and undoubtedly the entertainment will be one of the most splendid of ithe winter's charity balls. fTHE c«_mfl:ct.mg events of Mux}day showed clearly the lack of proper - consideration for things social in the capital and the real necessity ior studying the social calendar. Had this been done two such splendid ®eceptions as that in_honor of the Secretary of State and Mrs. &u hes iand the one at the Congressional Club for the Speaker and Mrs, Gillett #ted not have occurred on the same evening. While many of the notables ‘p.fh»vvhazhln‘non :}:tended both affairs, ;herc naturally was a restlessness iwhich destroys the composure supposed ts i i i isbcicty functions. e pposed to exist at such highly fmportant i ¢ Southern Relief ball, which was the last stopping plac 4 the Central American reception, selected the da’x’ep m'zl?y ':Qf::hsu:;tos iWhile that for the Washington Opera Company was rather an enforced :dne, many from the brilliant audience having to make more haste than clegance permits in going from the theater to the Pan-American Union. BUT quite repaying one for the nervous haste of the evening was the unequaled brillianc; . y of the reception in honor of the Secretary of iState and Mrs. Hughes, with the members of the Central American r({ele- ization as hosts. It quite repaid the belated ones, even those who arrived itrom the Congressional Club or opera only to find the receiving line oken up and the hosts mingling informally with the guests, It was, i wever, the proud boast of many that they got a glimpse of all four arger events and attended a dinner and supper party geli es. HL{RSDAY was to have been a quite general day at home for senators’ wives, but, with illnes: x Iness in their households, only a few received. Wi ‘Ash Wednesday but little more than two weeks av{ay, there will be ml'll: |@irush of visitors in the senatorial homes opened this week, In no season 48 past %-eays has there been so little officia visiting, and the once boasted, ’qng—su ering calling code of Washington seems to have been ruthlenl; «isrupted.
