S. in Railroad Strike By the Assoclated Press. BALTIMORE, Md., January 11— Hundreds of tanks of tear gas were sent out from Edgewood arsenal by the government in the recent railroad strike, according to Brig. Gen. Amos Fries, comman- dant at the reservation, in an ad- dress at the Engineers’ Club. The gas was shipped for emergency use to Army posts and not to rail- roads, he sald. Gen. Fries expressed the opinion that battleships and other large warcraft would be at the murcy of an attacking fleet of airpianes armed with gas bombs. But it was not merely as war measures that the government is experimenting __ with _ poisonous gases at the Edgewood laborato- rles, said Gen. Fries. Greater than these, he said, is the progress be- ing made in peace-time pursuits in discovering methods of utiliz- ing gases in the cure of discascs, in~ fighting vermin, cleansing orchards and farm products of the ravages of parasites that de- stroy vegetation. Extermination of rats in build- ings, thus freeing communities from the menace of the bubonic plague, he said, has been demon- strated thoroughly practicable In the case of orchards, he sald, it is now possible to spray them from airplanes.
