Further reduction In wages pald employes of the Washington navy vard has been recommended Ih the re- port of the wage board, which has been studying the wage situation for several weeks. The report of the board has been forwarded by Capt. J. H. Dayton, commandant, to the Navy i Department, where the reports of the wage boards of all navy yards and stations must be filed today. The local board recommends a cut of 1 cent per hour on the basic pay of all trades. The men have been confidently ex- pecting that the board would recom- mend an increase in the wages at the local yard, and assert that the data their committee has presented would warrant a substantial increase in the hourly wages. The local board in con- sidering wages pald by outside firms is allowed to take Into consideration wages pald plants within a radius of 180 miles of Washington. The aver- age of the figures collected by the board, it was asserted, calls for a reduction, although the men contend that an increase is warranted by the fact that there is a_general upward and that the labor market is getting short of mechanics and others such as are employed in the local naval gun factory. Action Is Considered. The report of the board was pre- sented to the men this afternoon, it was stated, and the shop committee, representing the employes, is under- stood to bo considering what action will be taken. wage board is not final, as the whole matter is considered by a general wage board at the Navy Department, at which the machinists and other employes from all parts of the coun- try will have.an opportunity to pre- sent _their views and facts. Ali- fas, president of District No. 44, ex- pressed some surprise when informéd by a reporter for The Star that the local board had recommended a de- crease for the local yard employes who work only on a five-day basls. Many of the wages of the local men have been cut 8o low by the five-day week on which they are working that it is said that it is difficult for those with familles to get along. Mr. Luther said that the redueétion. aside from the fact that outside plants seem to be Increasing the wages of their men, probably was made to bring the local yard within the appropriations. There is a feeling among the men that the data which they collected and presented would certainly war- rant an increase in wages here, and Hemstitching, Picot Edging, 10c Yard | SWoRZYNS ©1219-1221 G Street NW.
