FINANCIAL. THE “SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. 0O, DIVERSEDEALINGS | Week’s Price Range New York Stock Exchange RAIL ORDERS LEAD FORAGTIVE WEEK In Extremely Uneven Ad- vance, Rails Show to Great- ; est Advantage. NEW YORK, February 25.—In the -higher range of prices established by a majority of seasoned and specula: tive issues during this week's active and diverse dealings the securities market seemed to move along the lines of least resistance. The advance was extremely un- even, however, rails showing to greatest advantage. Canadian Pacific 1ed this division at a net gain of al- mdst ten points, the extensive ac- cumulation of that stock being at- tended by reports of “guarantees” by the Dominion government. Shares of various junior and newly reorganized railways, especially Mis- souri, Kansas and Texas, St. Louis and San Francisco and St. Louis South- western also registered substantial gains with coalers, cotton carriers and many of the eastern trunk line systems. Frequently Confasing. Olls, motors, equipments and steels Were frequently confusing. Several of the steels became very unsettled following the passing of the dividend on Republic Iron and Steel preferred and the poor statoments of earnings submitted by other companies of the same type. Tobaccos and kindred specialties evinced oceasional pressure on dubi- ous dividend prospects, but numerous miscellaneous shares, of which leath- ers, textiles, rubbers, and chemicals were~ conspicuous oxamples, seemed 1o be favored on better trade pros- pects. Demand for Funds. banking conditions, as set forth by the federal reserve board, were encouraging, but the lo- cal demand for funds was sufficlently consistent to_force call loans up to 6 per cent. Of the neutral quotations the Dutch al foreign exchanges rate was strongest, reflecting the consummation of a loan to that gov- ernment by an American bankKing syndicate. BALTIMORE PRODUCE. BALTIMORE, February 25 (Special). ~—With milder weather prevailing dur- ing the past few days and sharply lower prices at all leading distributing centers ‘the local egg market broke sharply and a record decline to 28 cents a dozen was the result. Outside advices today, however, are stronger and while offerings are fair buyers are taking hold more freely and the market ‘will no doubt advance next week. Re- ceipts of duck eggs so far have been light and there is ready sale for choice stock at 40 cents a dozen. The live poultry market is steady to firm under fairly active demand for all lines with exception of turkeys. Sei- son fur turkeys on the wane, with re- ipts and demand now both falling off. oice hens and young gobblers of small to medium size are selling at 35 to 45 cents, old toms 35, and poor and crooked breasts 30. large birds not wanted at this time of the year. The market on young chickens is firm under an improved demand for soft meat chickens averaging around two 10 two and one-half pounds apiece at 30 to 85 cents a pound, but rough, staggy and thin birds slow sale at 23 and 24. Receipts of fat old hens running lghter and selling readily at 26 to 28, smal and white leghorns fairly active at 24 and 25. Ducks are now being held back for eggs and con- sequently the market Js firm and de- Bsirable stock wanted at 30 to 35, with small and poor bringing 25. Market for geese rules steady, with receipts demand for fancy large capons, there 30 and 18 to 20 for peor and thin stock. Season for dressed poultry is draw- ing to a close, and aside from a fair demand for fancy large capons, there is 10 special inquiry for other lines. The trade generally is giving preference to live poultry, and, with the exception of capons, which seil at 38 to 42 cents a pound and 30 to 32 for small slips, dressed poultry will not bring any more and in some cases less than live. Receipts of white potatoes are run- ning ample, and under a fair move- ment the market rules steady, but it takes No. 1 stock showing choice quality to bring top prices of 2.15 per 100 pou Maryland and Virginia MeCorm lling mostly 175 to 1.90, whi s, all sections, and not active at 75 to s not wanted at any Sweets and yams are running d market rules easier, with supply equal to demand at 4.00 to 4.50 a barrel, and 2.00 to 2.50 for No. 2, but it takes cholce, smooth stock to draw outside quotations. Bushel hampers of both sweets and yams more active than barrel lots at 1.50 to 1.65, and 50 to 75 cents for No. 2 stock. Owing to increase in receipts of Florida vegetables, demand for na- tive and nearby garden truck has eased off the past week, onions being the only line holding steady in price at 6.00 to 850 per 100 pounds, while No. 2, all varieties, bring 3.00 to 5.00. Quotations on other lines follow: Norfolk kale and spinach firm, at 1. 1o 1.50_a barrel for the former and 2.00 to 4.00 for the latter; oyster plants, 8 and 9 cents bunch; parsnips, 40 and 50 cents four-eig! basket and 75 to 90 cents bushel; turnips in ample supply at-35 to 40 cents four-eighths basket. —_— NEW YORK BOND LIST. ¥EW YORK, February 25.— . 8. o regintered v coupd s, regis 4s,_coupo Panama 8s, registered Panama 3+, coupon. NEW YORK, February 2. business in the steel market shnxz improvement during the week, and Wwhile still of an frregular character was encouraging to the trade at large. Raflroad equipment orders furnished the most conspicuous buy- ing, but there was sufficient demand rom other channels to strengthen 'the opinion that the market is slowly but steadily broadening. The under- tone was steady, although there is enough competition to check any at- tempts to raise values. Plg iron was more active and prices were steady. Many of the orders were for small lots, but they were more numerous. In copper there has been no im- provement in demand and continued competition for small orders has led to further price shading by second hands and small producers. Smal lots of electrolytic are now said to be obtainable between 12% and 13 cents for spot or nearby shipment and the | declines have failed to stimulate buying interest, although some of the smelters are said to be buying cau- tiously in a small way on a scale down. Meanwhile the larger pro- ducers are waiting for the usual spring demand to develop. Tin has been dominated by the action of the London market. Straits for future shipment sold as low as 28%, but rallied to 29% while spot Straits are at 1-2 a cent premium, with supplies light. Lead remains unchanged, but is in & healthy statistical position. The zinc market, while guiet, has shown firmness and is not far from an_export basis. The offerings are light here, with no distress parcels to affect the market and prompt zinc is firmiy held in East st. Louis at Antimony has been quiet and rather easy owing to large arrivals recently, for which their is little de- mand. INSURANCE —in all its branches. Let us know your re- quirements.
