" QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR THE AUTOMOBILISTS ¢ Anawers to Last Week's Questions. 1. As a matter of safety to the car and passengers, as well as to save the storage battery from discharging, a short circuit in the electric system &hould be repaired as soon as possible. Keep the ammeter in working order, as this instrument is the only means of detecting a short circuit immediately it occurs. A short circuit in the sys-| tem can he located by the presence of heat and sparkling at the point in the wiring, where the defect happens to be. and if_neglected may cause com- bustion of nearby oil = or gasoline, T may result. The high tension wiring of the tric system requires a much heav- ier insulation than other wires of the system because of the high voltage cur- rent which passes through the former. Impulses going through it spark plugs would leak through thin insulation at points where the wire came into contact with the motor or metal wire supporters.” causing the spark plugs and consequently the cylinders to misfire. . However this noise when cut down to a mini- mum is not objectionable and by utaining the proper clearance will no harm to valves nor affect the ne's running. 4. The question as to whether or not an engine should be started and allowed to run for a short time while being flushed out with kerosene is perhaps better answered by deperib- ing the results of the method. hen. the old oil is drained from the crank- case of an engine a great deal of sedi- ment remains in the oil pan. If kero- sene is applied it mixes with this ediment when it enters the pan. and if the engine is then operated the re- i sult is merely to cause this sediment | to be thrown about (n;lde dlhcdenuln. by the connecting rod ends dippin land splashing through it. As ol sult more metal chips and grindings are deposited on bearing surfaces {than were there originally. The Jogi- cal procedure would seem to be, fipst, to remove the oil pan after draining, |clean thoroughly, and, after wiping | away as much sediment as possible ! from inside the crankcase and mov- ! ing parts, replace the oil pan and pro- ceed with the kerosene treatment. The engine can then be run for a few seconds to wash out the bearings | without danger of leaving them in a { gritty condition. It is advisable to {use several applications of keroséhe !and to remove the oll pan again after | the first bath, to wipe out any par- { ticles which may have been carried i down from the working parfs. Water in the crankcase of an en- ither originates from combus- cylinder heads and leaking | past piston rings or, gets in from the | outside with the oil when the crank- - is filled. Combustion of fuel | mixed with air produces water chemi- cally in the form of steam, and if it Jeaks past uiston rings will condense !in the crankcase below. { Thin Week's Questions. ! 1. Needless to say, there is all of the old reliabili- ty, responsibility, and regularity of perform- ance—more pronounced than ever because in the Cadillac plant the passage of time is a centinuous process of improvement. But in addition to these hidden ‘traits of character’ which have made it the world’s stapdard of motoring efficiency—the Type 61 Eight Cylinder Cadillac brings you other posi- tive and quickly recognizable qoalities which immensgely enhance ease and enjoyment. Within a few minutes from the time you have taken the wheel you will discern a more pro- nounced quality of resilient roadability than the Cadillac has ever developed before. In other words, it is our judgment, that this Type 61 accomplishes the greatest advance yet recorded in overcoming road discomfort and insuring riding ease. Largely by way of simple but fundamentally sound changes, such as lowering the center of gravity without decreasing road clearance, smoothness of travel has been surprisingly improved. : Again, a recently adopted and equally simple improvement in carburetor practice has bettered Cadillac acceleration so that its pro- verbial, swift surge of power is even more Phaeton - - - Roadster - - - ‘Touring Car = - $3790 3790 3940 ‘Two-Passenger Coupe immediately brought into action and mileage per gallon of gasoline increased. The new Cadillac gets away grandly, and communicates both to the one at the wheel and those in the tonneau, a sense of pent-up reserve power that is delightful. The same simple changes that have given it agreater degreeof road resiliencehavebrought with them much greater beauty than before. The Type 61 is a delight to the eye not merely at the first admiring glance, but in the wealth of attractive details which a closer inspection reveals. Experienced motoristswill delightin theartis- ticand convenient arrangement of the instru- ment board, the windshield and ventilator improvements, the restful simplicity and grace of the new steering wheel and controls, the convenient inspection lamp, and other refinements of a most pleasing character. Incidentally, Cadillac coach work has im- proved upon itself so that the new car comes to you not only with greater charm of general design but a far more impressive and beau- tiful finish. These latter are the lesser satisfactibns—the real delight will come in the revelation of greater riding ease and roadability, and swifter acceleration. A delightful experience is in store for Cadillac owners and non-owners alike. = - $4540 - - 4540 - 4690 - 4950 F. O. B. Detroit, War Tax to be added CADILLAC MOTOR CAR COMPANY, DETROIT MICH.
