Thomas Greene. also a Campbell county dep- uty, was shot in the left chest and left arm. Deputies Smith and Ward were brought to Knoxville and are under treatment at a hospital. Greene's in- juries are not considered serious. Smith appears to have been the more “seriously wounded. Deputy Sheriff Vincent of Carreyville escaped injury. James H. Hayes, alleged moonshiner, charged with having fired on the of- “ ficers. escaped from Campbell county. but was arrested near Morristown and | brought to Knoxville. Hayes and his son were traveling in an auotmobile when_arrested by two officers. The elder Hayes was suffering {rom a gun- shot wound in one of his legs. After Sheriff Harmon of Jacksboro heard of the battie he organized a posse “ and started to the isolated mountain dis- trict where the battle occurred to hunt for the man who fired on the revenue force. Here it was discovered that Ward nad left the spot where he had fallen, and the bloodhounds trailed him about half a mile, where he was found and given first aid and later brought ! here. The scene of the battle was on Fork creek, two miles west of Lafollette. Of- ficers ‘arrived at a_still, said to have been operated by Hayes, before day- break and remained in walting until the arriva! of Hayes about daybreal Deputy Marshal Smith called to Hayes to drop a gun it is said he carried. Hayes is alleged to have turned the gun toward the officers, one shot being fired, the bullet narrowly missing them.
