ROME, September 17.—Italy's ‘“‘un- known soldier” will be buried the morning_of October 4, at the Altar of the Fatherland, which has been erected near the monument to King Victor Emanuel. The burial will be preceded by a great procession, and the king and government officials will participate in the ceremony. Eleven unidentified bodies will be disinterred in battlefields in northeastern Italy and conveyed to the Cathedral of Aquileia, just west of the Isonzo river, where Italy's le- gions fought their most stirring cam- paign. The mother of a dead "sol- dier, or the widow of one who lost his life in the war will be taken to nd asked to select one to be tranaferred to Rome. The other ten will remain at Aquilela, and will be given solemn burial on the day that their comrade is honored here. A special train will bring the casket to Rome, traveling by daylight and stopping at all stations. The body of the unknown soldier will arrive here on October 3 and will lie in state until the funeral. —_— LEGION STARTS PROBE. Complaints That Shipping Board’s Fleet Officers Show Discrimination. NORFOLK, Va., September 17.—Nor- folk Post, American Legion, will in- vestigate alleged discrimination against former service men and American seamen by officers of the United States Shipping Board's steel fleet lying near Camp Eustls, near here, as the result of complaints filed with the legion by Americans working on the fleet. It was charged that foreign seamen, including some Germans, have re- ceived preference by officers of the fleet, two of whome were allegd to be of alien extraction. The steel fleet consists of nearly 300 vessels, most of which have been lying idle for nearly a year. A commit- tee was appointed by the legion com- mander to investigate thoroughly the charges, which, if verified, will be taken up with high officials of the Shipping Board. ——e MOLASSES AIDS IN TESTS. Substance on Pine Sticks Saves Many Dollars to Gasoline Men. ST. PAUL, Minn., September 17.— Little dabs of cheap molasses on plain pine sticks in the hands of sixty- one oil inspectors in Minnesota have saved users of gasolne thousands of dollars during the cording to Hjalmar Nilshon, inspector. Incidentally, this simple test for discovering water in gasoline has gone out from Minnesota to a dozen other states. On the theory that water than gasoline and always ks to the bottom, Mr. Nilshon devised the simple test a year ago. A stick dip- ped in cheap molasses glides through gasoline without showing any effect on the molasses, but when water is encountered the molasses comes off the stick. K. M. ¥nnunl. commander, of Fort Worth, ‘ex. Miss Bachman is the daughter of ! State Supreme Court Justice Nathan L. Bachman, and granddaughter of the Rev. Jonnathan W. Bachman, chaplain general of the United Con- federate Veterans. She becomes the official representative of the staff of the commander-in-chief. The president general of the Daugh- ters of the Confederacy, through cus- tom, is the matron of honor, and this year the honor goes to Mrs. ‘Weeks McKinney of Paducah, Ky. BOY STARTED BIG BLAZE. ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, N. S,, Septem- ber 17.—The fire which destroyed ap- proximately one-third of the build- ings in this town, September 7, with a loss of $250,000, was the result of a boy's desire “to see the man put ‘water on it with a hose.” This was revealed when Thomas Miller, twelve, confessed, according to the police, that he started the fire in the stable of the Queen Hotel, which spread with such rapidity that most of the business section was wiped out before the flames were brought under control.
