Dear Folks: Shortly before leavin' on my vaca- tion I expressed in this colyum my opinion of certain automobile speed- demons, an’ in a ruther pithy bit o' verse told out loud just what I'd do if ever give the chance to set in jedge- ment on sich misbehavers! That my outburst was misunderstood by some gas-car owners is quite evident from the big batch o' protest letters I found in my box on returnin’ to the Job, many of which tore me to pleces an' accused me of bein' absolutely one-sided an’ more'n unfair! One 111 “persimmon” in particular was most abusive, called me a bol- shevikl, sald I was knockin’ the greatest convenlence of modern times, an’' claimed that if I'd take time to go deep enuff into the matter I'd find that at least 90 per cent of all traffic accidents was due entirely to kecrlessness on the part of pede: trians! He ended his tirade by be, gin' a square deal for the much- abused motorist! Hones', his epistle broke me up considerable! Now, far be it from me to start any extended controversy on this much mooted question, but in all fairness to myself I do feel justified in settin’ myself straight with the thousands of safe an’ sane automobilists who flitter about our city, an’ for who I have the greatest respect! Thurfore, 1 takes this opportunity of passin’ a few remarks touchin’ on an’ apper- tainin’ to the jay-walker, of which, lemme say, we sure have our full quota! Unlike a speeder, the jay-walker is able to get away with blue murder without bein' dee-tected! If missed by the motorist nuthin' ever comes of it, ‘ceptin’ a mess of hot air be- tween him an’ the “misser,” an' as pedestrians greatly outnumber them who own cars, as a rule his buddies back him up an’ sick him to the limit! It spilled on the pavement, well, there ain’t nuthin’ to it! Old mister slipshod-walker wins off by himself, for the sight of him sufferin’ as he says stretched on the sidewalk s0 upsets the onlookers that nine times outa ten they wanta string up the driver! O’ course, there’s rully no way of tellin’ exactly just what proportion of traffic accidents is due to reckless drivin’ an’ what to keer! walki; ‘PIRATE PARTS" MOTORISTS' BANE Substitution by Repairmen Makes Many Owners Complain. Automobile manufacturers gener- ally are reporting that service on their cars in the hands of owners is suffering because of repairmen’s cu pidity in substituting inferior parts for genuine in making replacements, according to a bulletin issued by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce. “Pirate” parts, as they are called in the trade, are very unlikely to be as good as the original, because, to undersell the latter, they must be made cheaper, which nearly always means inferior material or workman- ship. So, a8 explained by Arthur B. Cumner, chairman of the service com- mittee of the N. A. C. C., the motorist is the loser. , Rarely Gets Benefits. “Seldom does he get the benefit of the lower cost of the part,” says Mr. Cumner, “and he is always out of pocket if the part is Inferior. There is no ‘comeback’ on them if the service thelr parts render is not satisfactory. Motorists See Result. “Motorists generally will appreciate that paying the price for the best material and workmanship, rigidly Inspecting the product and standing | the loss of rejecting that which is not up to the standard. all tend to increase the cost of genuine parts. A little thought will show that it is money well invested, not only for the sake of the manufacturer, but quite as much for the ultimate owner of the car. : “In advising automobilists, no mat- ter where they buy their repairs or have their service dome, to insist that none but genuine parts be used for replacements, the manufacturers feel that they are doing that which is to the interest of the automoblilists quite as much as to themselves. “Dealers generally have a concern akin to that of the manufacturer in protecting the reputation of the car, hence when a car owner goes to an authorized service station of his make | of car the chances are small that he will get any substitute parts.” Gives an Illustration. As an illustration of his conten- tion, Mr. Cumner said in conclusion: “A service manager of one of the automobile manufacturers recently had his attention called to a number of parts which had been returned in a few days by owners who were very much dissatisfled with the service the parts had given. Investigation show- ed that the parts were not genuine. So it is that car owners are being urged to interest themselves to see that they do get bona fide parts. | “The manufacturer's interest in the sale of parts is incidental. His prin- cipal business {s selling cars. The dealer in pirate parts or the repair man selling them is looking for a large turnover so that the smaller priced parts may net him a profit. He cannot be expected to be unselflishly concerned for the owner. Since the manufacturers invariably recommend genuine parts, it is wise to regard their advice, inasmuch as their in- terest is only in safeguarding the reputation and not in selling part. | permitting these parts to g0 lnlul i ?
