Bert McPherson of the Detroit police from Bartolo Fontano, held here in con- nection with alleged crimes of the “Good Killers,” caused him to wire the chief of police in Detroit today to arrest six members of a gang be- lieved to have killed eleven men in that city since 1916. Fontano's information, McPherson said, revealed that four of the six men sought went to Detroit from New York and committed murder by order of the Camorra headquarters in’ Italy. The detectives said he believed that this band of assassins was responsible for the slaying of Sam and Tony Gia- nola, a father and son named Dittollo and the three Bushalotto brothers. Fontano's statements. have stirred the New Yo police. Information wrung from hfm was regarded by Detective Sergt. NEW YORK, August 20.—Cautious izens bearing samples of their pri- vate stock flocked to the govern- ment’s liquor testing laboratory in the federal building today and im- plored the chemists to test the stuff at once. They had heard reports. that the government was to place its facil- fties at the disposal of citjzens to save the public from the conse- quences of drinking wood alcohol and the like. None was bold enough to bring more than an ounce or two in a bottle, but all were anxious to have the government pass on the genuine- ness of their property. Chief Chemist R. A. Edson told them that he had received no author- ity from Washington to make such tests, and turned them away with a warning as to prohibition agents.
