BIRMINGHAM, Ala., August 13.—No special grand jury will b called t6 iR+ vestigate the killiog Thursday night of the Rt. Rev. James E. Coyle, pas- tor of St..Paul's Catholic Church, by -{Re¢, Edwin R. Stephenson,- County Solicitor Joseph R. Tate anaounced tonight This decision was reach by the solicitor because of the fact that the regular grand jury will be in session August 23, and the case will be submitted to’the regular body at that time. A warrant charging Rev. Stephen- son 'with murder in the first degree was sworn out by Coroner J. D. Rus- sum today. In the opinion of court offictals. the trial of Stéphenson prob- ably will be set for early in-October, in ‘case he is indicted. .The accused minister was visited by a nulmber of attorneys today, and, while no an- nouncement has been made, it is be- lieved that he has arranged for coun- sel to represent him. Father Coyle was shot to death on the front porch of the rectory. Rev. Stephenson stat- ing afterward that he shot in self- defonse after being struck twice by ihe priest. Bishop Charges Propaganda. Pontifical high requiem mass was held over the body of the dead priest today, the services being conducted by the Rt. Rev. E. P. Allen, Bishop of Mobile. The funeral of Father Coyle will be held tomorrow afternoon. In his sermon Bishop Allen charged that the killing of Father Coyle was the result' of propaganda carried on in Alabama agajnst the Catholic. church and Catholic institutions by “unprinci- pled politiclans.” Father Coyle was killed by. Rev. Stephenson- after the priest had per- formed a marriage ceremony uniting Miss’ Ruth Stephenson, daughter of the minister, to Pledro Gussman, a Catholic. Daughter at Services. Mrs. Gussman attended the services at St. Paul's today. “I am sorry my father did that' she sald, referring to the tragedy. “He himself has married many elop- ing couples. only there were harsh words and no shootings as a result.” Rev. Stephenson is known locally as the “marrying parson” because of the large number of ecloping couples. he has joined together at the court- house, where he made his headquar- ters. The grand jury commended the efforts of { Sheriff EIf S. Harrison. his deputies | the Maryland state police force and | Constable Thomas H. Garrison in this case. During the session the ‘grafd jury investigated thifteen cases, ri turning ten true bills. The grand jusy expressed regret over ‘the death of Peter B. Bradley of the Baltimofe police force. There are at -present! sixteen prisoners in the county jail| and a number out on bail. Most of these are hoys, both .white and col- ored.
